The centrifugal clutch has to come off first, then the friction clutch to be able to get to the shift shaft assembly. On the first clutch make sure you bend the holding washer away from the nut, then stake it back against the flats when you replace the clutch. Sorry that the general manual didn't cover the Expedition 425 clutch system. If you get into trouble here's one for the Expedition.http://www.recrepairinfo.com/product...-manual-p-8940

That worked thank you very much! Few other questions for you, when the shaft broke it was in reverse does that matter now that I have the new one on? Also will removing and putting back the clutches mess with the timing?

Make sure after you get the shaft in to shift up to neutral and see if all gears work, then back to neutral when you reinstall the clutches. The clutches have nothing to do with timing.

This is exactly where we are right now, we was able to get the shift shaft assembly out without removing clutches. We have a new shift shaft assembly but didn't get it right away, & now don't know how to put assembly back in, especially the spring placement. The manual I got didn't show it either. Any help greatly appreciated!

Being that we only sold a few of the Xpeditions,I never had to replace the shift shaft, just a few shift levers and worked on those troublesome reverse modules. Don't know what manual you have, but here's three. First one most folks have no complaint on,especially the 5 buck price.2000 Polaris Xpedition 425 Service Manual PDF Download Plus here's one for a little more.2000 POLARIS XPEDITION 425 4X4 ATV REPAIR MANUAL Trade bit is the most expensive one.https://www.tradebit.com/filedetail....actory-service Doesn't matter on the year models as the 2000-2002 Xpeditions were all the same as far as engines and other major parts.
