I'm doing my first cylinder & head replacement on a 2011 Sportsman 500 HO.
Torque procedures would indicate these are stretch bolts which are usually discarded after being used once. I don't see any specific information regarding head and cylinder bolt replacement. Can you clarify?

 

When in doubt, replace. New ones can't be very expensive. I'm pretty cheap, too.

 

Yes the torque specs are meant for seating the head and base gaskets properly along with compensating for any head bolt stretch.Manual says to replace all 4 head bolts if you notice any thread damage or bolt stretch marks. Don't think I've ever had to replace the head bolts for these two reasons.Maybe I was lucky, but I just reused them and never had a come back for leaking,blown head gasket,etc.Torque specs are very critical.. From the manual:
Coat the threads of the 4 bolts and two small bolts with oil.
a. Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft.-lb.).
b. Tighten to 70 Nm (51 It .-lb.).
c. Loosen each of the four bolts exactly 180'
( 1/2 turn).
d. Loosen each of the four bolts again exactly
180' ( 1/2 turn) .
e. Tighten to 15 Nm ( 11 ft.-lb.).
f. Tighten each of the four bolts exactly 90' (1/4
turn).
g. Finally, tighten each of the four bolts exactly
90' (1/4 turn) more.
9. Tighten the two small 6 mm bolts (8, Figure
to 8 Nm (71 inch pounds)

 

Thanks for the response. As an old Ford tech I've done dozens of 3.8 ltr. head gaskets which came with new bolts as part of the kit. That's why I asked.

 

just wondering that was the head bolts but what about the cylinder bolts torque specs
