Default Old Trail Boss needs help

I have an '87 Trail Boss. Whenever the motor gets hot (usually after 15 min of riding), it loses ALL power. I have to give it full throttle just to keep it running above idel. When it cools down, it's fine again. Unfortunately I found out the hard way, out on the trail. I have asked a few dealers in the area, and no one seems to have a clue.

The machine has quite a bit of mileage on it. 2 years ago I had the motor completely rebuilt (which took over 6 months), and last year the clutch was "rebuilt". I haven't done anything to the carb yet.

I was wondering if the pipe could have something to do with it. It has been getting quite loud lately. I don't know enough about expansion chambers to make an educated guess.

It also smokes heavily and makes no power until it warms up.

And, it is also fouling plugs quite often.

I want to get this machine going again for my wife and kids. It's plenty easy to ride and handles fairly well.

What a list.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The pipe may have clean out plugs in it, not sure about your model. If so take them out, rev it up to clean carbon deposits out of the muffler. You are running too rich on the bottom end, you need to make some carb adjustments to get it under control. You should also check the float levels for the carb and make sure none of the vent hoses for the gas tank or carb are clogged up or pinched.

Im not sure on this but i have heard before that when a motor gets hot it can try to expand which migh cause it to lose compression so therfore it would lose power. I am not sure on this though, so i wouldnt take it to serious. Good luck anyway, hope you get it running right.

Myn did the same thing, sometimes you had to push it along to get it going it seemed so loaded up. I got an oil injector block off and it ran perfect. Yeah it is sometimes a pain mixing gas but I think it makes them run a lot better and safer it the pump were to fail.

Got it running right. Took off the carb and tore it down. Was really dirty. Cleaned everything up, including the hoses and put it all back together. Also found the choke cable sticking which I took care of. Now it pulls strong up to top speed and does wheelies easily. Way more power than before the rebuild. Faster than my Wolvy now. Don't know if I want my kids on it now.

Thanks for the advice.

BTW, there is no high/low selector. Did they ever put one on a 2X4 Trail Boss?

Glad to hear you got it running right, but i cant believe its faster than your wolverine! I have never seen a wolverine, but the trail boss is heavy and only a 325.

Redneck, the older TrailBoss (up to '98) were 250cc 2 stroke. Same motor as the Trailblazer, they just switched to the 325cc 4 stroke in '99. Myn a '93 is 2 stroke and so is his '87

I see. I forgot they used to be 250 2 strokes. I bet with some mods they could be pretty fast.

Yup, I just used the Trailblazer mods on myn and all but the pipe are the same. I still use a Blazer pipe but the mounting tabs are different. Check out my pics
