1st OIL CHANGE
#1
My brother and I both have 2000 Magnum 4 X 4's and its time for the first oil change. As usual the Polaris owners manual is useless. What is the best oil to use? Also we ride in Northern MI during the winter when there is not enough snow for snowmobiling, should we use a differnt grade in the winter? Thanks.

I would stick with the 0W40 Synthetic offered by Polaris. It is the recommended oil. It is called Polaris Premium 4 All Season Synthetic. It is Polaris Part number 2871281. It has an ambient temperature range of -40F to 120F. It is the only oil you will need year round.

I would agree with Deej, use the Polaris 0W40. I hate paying the $7.50 a quart that they stick it to you for, but remember, your only buying two quarts every three to six months depending on the amount of riding you do. If you are not near a Polaris dealer, I have heard some people using Mobil 1 5W30 full synthetic. I have also heard people using 20W50, but mostly for use in extremely hot weather. I would not recommend this due to the cold temperature in northern Michigan during the winter. Just my thoughts, I have never claimed to be an oil expert.

Polaris synthetic 0W-40 would be the safest oil to use, and is required to fulfill warranty. After warranty runs out, I would and do use Mobil 1 synthetic 15W-50 during summer and Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-30 during the winter. Mobil 1 synthetic oil is excellent. I run it in everything that I have. If your Polaris dealership is close, I would probably use their oil. However, Mobil 1 is much more available to me, and I like it. One other thing you can do is to use a wix oil filter. The wix part number is 51358 for all Polaris 4-strokes. Wix makes an excellent oil filter, and at about half the price of the Polaris oil filter

Burky00........Mine is a 325 so I have no gauge. I have only gone through a couple of tanks of gas.
I plan on doing the first change sometime this summer. Just would like to get the first change done. After that I will change it 1 time per year. Still have not decided on what oil and filter to use.

The break in oil change (the first change) is the most important so don't overlook it or leave it too long. This is the ooil change that gets rid of small metal particles etc left over from the assembly process or created during engine break in. I think the recommendation from Polaris was for the initial one at 20 hours, then every 100 hours after that. Being fanatical about oil changes, I did 2 initial ones, one at 10 hours and one at 20 hours. The oil came out of the tank pretty darn clean at both changes. The dirtiest oil was the cup that was drained from the sump of the engine. Based on my usage, I change the oil about twice a year now. That Polaris synthetic comes out quite clean every time.

By the way guys, I talked to my dealer about oil, and he said using Mobile 1 would NOT void the warranty. They do allow oil with the API SN Rating. He said the 15-50 was a good choice for summer. I also got 2 filters from a buddy with a sp500, who bought a case. I just can't remember the name right now. If any one wants to know I will go look. They are $6.00 a pop. I really think that as long as the filter passes certification test, it is more than good for the short time between oil chages in 4-Wheelers. You should see the little paper filter Yamaha used on the Grizzly. It was a real joke a $9, but it did the job. At least Polaris uses spin on filters that you can get in the after market. Happy trails! Mudden in Mich.
