I know it has been talked on here before, but I cannot find a link or where to order a bushing to replace the factory bushing on my 95 xplorer......

Also any insite on steps to preform?? I do have a dremel and a angle drill[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

I tried HPD but under the search..it must be called something else.......

Also,, those that have installed this....does it really Help??

Here is the Steering Post Bearing at HPD. It is much stronger and longer lasting than the stock one. RCR also carries the HPD bushing. It is a pretty straightforward and easy to do modification. You need to remove parts to access the steering post, will vary according to machine. Remove the lower cotter pin and nut, loosen the upper steering support, take the tie rods loose at the steering post and it should slide up and out of the bottom bushing pretty easily. Take your right angle drill and drill out the rivets holding the stock bushing in place. You may have to open the holes to allow for the new bolts supplies with the HPD kit, this is a good time to check the fit, bolt the new bushing block on, replace all the parts, tighten things up and grease the newly installed bushing. I just did mine on my scrambler. Pretty straight forward. I have the HPD unit and had to remove the plastic and gas tank to drill enlarge the holes because I don't have a right angle drill. I found that a dremmil with a sanding or grinding bit works good to gring the rivit heads off with then pry the bearing off.

 

There is also enough material on the HPD unit to allow you to drill, tap, and install a grease zerk.

Not really sure on how to accurately tap the hole for a zerk!

It's a bushing. I can try to get a digital pic in the moring, but after the install, it's kinda hard to see. Let me know if you want the pic...or should I say the attempted pic. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

 

On my scramber there is a grease zerk in the steering stem that lubes the bearing, i think. I don't know if it is the same on the older models though.

 

HPD call them a bearing! / so let's be honest here...does it improve the steering feel like the new models??
I don't have any slop, as I fixed that last year with a leather piece I put under the stock bushing,,, but it steers like a HOG!!.
