Default Scrambler Sprockets

Anyone ever notice that aftermarket companies say that stock gearing for the Scrambler (specifically 98 and some others that I know of) is supposed to be 13/38??? This has often confused me and I know BigBad had a hard time finding a 36 tooth for his Scrambler. The actual size is supposed to be 13/36, but it is hard as heck to find a 36 tooth rear from any aftermarket company. Maybe Polaris should let them in on the secret?? LOL. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else noticed this?? Here is an example.... Sunstar Sprockets.

Tell me about it!!!! Like you said, I had a REAL hard time finding an aftermarket 36t. Hot Seat was the only company that had one. I am sure that I could have paid Sidewinder a small fortune to make me a 36t rear. Luckily HSP came through on this one for me. In fact, I just got my chain in today and am going to put the sprockets and chain on tomorrow. I have a few questions though. Do the sprockets (front and rear) just unbolt or is there a snap ring that I should know about? What do I torque the bolts to? Should I use loctite? I was told that my chain is 76 links. I had to get a 120 link chain because that is all they had. So, I will have to cut it. Now, when they say 76 links, does that include the masterlink or no, basicly, should I cut the chain so that there are 76 links and then the masterlink? Thanks

Who knows?? The front sprocket has a snap ring. The rear sprocket... remove the wheel, the sprocket guard, and the sprocket unbolts with a spacer. I think you can slip everything over the hub. Torque?? Have no idea. I would probably use loctite, but it is unlikely to come apart. Yeh I was looking at my supplimental sheet I got with my Scrambler last night and it says 76 pins for the chain also. That should be 76 including the master link, but to be on the safe side, you may want to cut one link longer to be certain, you can always remove another link. I guess HotSeat nand Polaris are the only ones that make the 36 rear.

i think they now updated the gearing to 13/34,stock,13/38 gearing will loose some on top end,but will hook up harder on low end,hot seat have them.

Does anyone know, if or how changing the gearing affects the four wheel drive function? I know tire size does, but does sprocket size?

If you change your sprocket you will have you front tires and your rear tires going two different speeds. Not a good thing .Might be ok in mud but or hard surface it will cause problems.

So what you are saying if someone wants some more top end to drop the amount of teeth on the back sprocket?

I think it's: A bigger sprocket (more teeth?) will give you more top-end but your acceleration will suffer....smaller sprocket will give you better acceleration but less top end.... Think of a 10speed bicycle....

Of course that's what I'm basing the above off of....I have no experience with quads but the theory should be the same.

I guess it depends on which end you change the # of teeth on as well.....
