Default How much is enough?

Transmission fluid that is. The manual says 1 5/8 inch from top of hole. The mechanic I talked to today said to fill it to the bottom of the fill plug threads. The oil comes in a 1 quart container, so how much do I need to put in this thing?

The 1 5/8 inch is correct, anything more and it is too much and can "airiate and expand" and could cause seal problems according to a mechanic I spoke with. I was wondering this too when I bought mine and went to check all fluid levels ... here is what I did and it works great. I took a nail and measured 1 5/8 inches down, put it in a vice, and bent the nail 90 degrees at that point. Now I can insert the nail into the filler hole until it hits the bend, pull it out, and if there is oil on the nail, I am good ... if not, add slowly until it touches the nail. Works great for me!

Thanks! I measured a wooden dowel and did it that way. My transmission now shifts a little better.
