Is gumout safe to use for cleaning the chains? Or will it damage the O rings?

 

It is recommended to use Kerosine on 0-ring chains

 

Diesel fuel works very well too. Don't use gas it will tear up the O-rings.

 

Get a Uneek Chain Scrubber from Rocky Mountain ATV, it comes with cleaner fluid. It is cheap and very effective.

 

NCS, I was planning on getting the Moose scrubber from Dennis Kirk. I just needed to get it done yesterday before we ride this weekend. The rear chain had just been cleaned before I bought the bike, but the front and center chains didn't look like they ever had. I thought gumout would be a good way to get through the crap quickly, but since no-one could tell me if it was safe, I just used the old WD-40. It works, just takes alot of brushing and a lot of WD. BTW, I use Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protectent for lube. It's a dry wax-like synthectic film lube that seems to work great and is not very expensive.

 

It is tempting sometimes to go the quickest route to clean something, but most times it is safest to do it the old fashioned way. I wouldn't use anything you aren't sure about, you can look around at chain manufacturer's web sites, some of them have alot of info about what to use and what not to use.

 

In a pinch dish washing liquid and an old toothbrush work good.

 

95sport400 i hope u didnt use wd-40!! its the worst thing you can put on your chain it makes the o rings fall off. trust me when i say do NOT USE WD-40!!! it made 5 of my o rings fall off and beacause i didnt no what was wrong it wore down my front sprocket. but luckily it was under warrenty so the fixed it for me. go to the dealership and buy some of the chain spray im not sure of the name but if you want i will go look in my shed but its about $9.

 

WD 40 will NOT damage the o-rings, REPEAT NOT!!! Gumout certainly will, I have used WD 40 for years on my o-ring chains, not one has lost an o-ring though the life of the chain....

 

Agreed, I've used WD-40 for years as well. It just doesn't clean the really bad crap that well. Powerslider, where in Michigan are you? I'm a yooper myself.
