I'm thinking of putting a clutch kit on my 98 SP500 and was wondering if it is worth it and what kind I should get. Thanks for the help.

I can't speak for the utility clutch kits personally, however, I will say that my clutch kit for my Scrambler is awesome. It's so good in fact that if I were to trade and get a 2000 model I wouldn't even bother picking it up from the dealer until he had the kit on. If that is any comparison for you then I would say that the utility kit should be pretty great too. You got to realize that Polaris has to make quads that are suitable for everyone where as the clutch kits let you customize for your usage. So based on my experience I'd say it would be worth your while to get a clutch kit.

Go for it! I put EPI clutch kits on my Xplorer400 and my Scrambler400. It's like night and day! The improvement in acceleration and torque is amazing.

I have a '99 SP500 w/ EBS and wanted to do the same thing. I talked to the mechanics at the local dealer (Southeast Polaris) and they said that if I really wanted to get a clutch kit that I should take off the EBS and then install a clutch kit. The EBS hampers the efforts of the kit. I asked them about adding the Scrambler carb and cam and the answer was that I could do it but the machine would rip itself apart because of all the extra power.

If you really want the best clutch performance, ditch the EBS. For most people it's fine though.

Has anyone tried the true-utility clutch kits? The ones that say "not for aggressive riding" or somthing like that, and I made for towing, plowing, etc? Wondering how they would help in the mud.

Sparke, I have a 2000 500 scrambler and I'm not happy with the clutch that is in it...seems to be waisting alot of power..slipping, and yes I've changed belts but still the same thing. I was wondering if you would have any suggestions on who builds a good clutch...I use mine for hunting and aggresive trail rideing. Any input on this would be helpful

I had the dealership install a EPI sport/utility clutch kit on my 99 Sportsman 500cc 4x4.It cost 169 dollars for the kit and 60 dollars for installion. What a big waste of money. It did raise the engagement speed somewhat, but this is really a down fall when snow plowing. In order to get the quad to move backwords in reverse without touching the overide switch is nearly impossible with the higher engagement speed of the kit.It gave me no more top end but it did seem to get from point A-B a LITTLE quicker. Was it worth the extra $$?I THINK NOT.====BILL

Bill, thanks for your thoughts, I'm kind of at a turning point, seems that hot seat makes a kit that would be just about right for what I want to do. I'm not sure if that was the one that you had installed, but looking at the write up on it kind of looks promising at least for what I want my machine to do.
