Default 400 Scambler overheating?

We went riding today and 20 minutes into the ride we stopped and I noticed I was losing coolant......then the light came on.....I noticed the fan wasn't running....I let it cool but it got hot again.....the fan still runs sometimes but not like it should......the light was on and the fan wasn't running....but then when we got back to the truck it was running.....any ideas....maybe a thermal swich or something.....its' a 2000 model.....where do I look? Thanks..... Oh yeah....I installed the rcr kit on my sons tb and he loves it....he is only 8 and my wife says it's way to fast for him....it seems to be working fine.....I put the 140 jet in....it did load up on him when i overheated....he let it idel for a little then it died and wouldn't start.....after it set for a while it started and ran fine.....

the head gaskets are known to go and leak exhaust gases into the coolent, causing coolant to leak out of the overflow and overhaet the machine. good luck.
