Fan will not turn off???
#1
I just got back froma GREAT 400 mile atv ride in northern Ontario and for the entire trip my fan on my 300 Explorer ran continuosly! Is there a relay or some type of device which turns this fan on and off? On the other hand my brother inlaws 300 Explorers fan never went on at all despite some very hot and humid weather, but his must have been overheating as it had a serious case of the low end BOGS! I called a dealer and he said that the fan itself was defective and at the price he quoted me, maybe I would try and corect this problem myself. Any help will be appreciated before I have to go to the dealer.I can!t beleive that the fan is bad as it ran for some 400 miles without ever stopping! Thanks.

Temp sending unit is mounted behind cylinder head.Remove one of the wires, if fan quits running you need a new sending unit. If not could be the pair of wires going to the unit are shorting one another. Trace and fix. Shouldnt be to hard to fix. If the fan is running its hard to believe its defective.

Pete,
These guys have the right idea. The fan is controlled solely by that thermal switch. When the engine heats up the switch closes and turns the fan on. As suggested, simply pull one or both of the wires off the thermal switch. If the fan stops, the switch is defective, replace it. If the fan still runs then there is a short in the wiring somewhere. I also agee, should not be hard to find. The fan motor is fine.
Good Luck

On my Xpeition the sensor is on the lower right hand side of the radiator, if youre siting on the machine. Under the "hood" there should be a connector that leads to the sensor. You can unplug it there to see if the fan shuts off. I have the opposite problem, the fan wasnt coming on so I unplugged the connector and "jumped" across the 2 wires so that it would be on all the time. I have the new sensor, just havent put it on yet. If yours takes the same sensor be prepared to pay about $50 for it.
