smoking '88 trailboss......help
Hellow everyone,
I just bought an '88 trailboss 250 that did not smoke when I originally looked at it and was easy to start, but now smokes like mad and is tough to start. I have not had it out on the trails yet but would like to,soon. I am planning on draining the old gas and oil, replacing plug and air filter. Any suggestions on how to eleminate the smoke and make it start easier would be appreciated. Also, is it ok to run with all that smoke?
Yes, as you can probably tell, I am not very mechanical (yet),

iam not to familar with the trailboss's but are they liquid or fan cooled cause if it is liquid cooled you may be out of antifreeze but if you have fan cooled maybe the fan isn't working it is oil injected right so just add some more oil maybe your running low

You need to find the oil injector pump and make sure the arm is returning all the way when the throttle is released. They sometimes get sticky or even the return spring breaks. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal on the quad, now you need to invest in a service manual. You'll have a tough time keeping up something that old without one.

Sense it doesnt cost much to do a top end job, I dont have the equipment to check compresion and I bought it used maybe it is wise to just do it. I will start with the plug, air filter, new oil and fuel, oil injecter arm (sticking), spring and see what happens. If it still smokes I wont run it this weekend and plan on a topend job this winter. When/while I have it apart can I ream out the bore and put an oversize piston in it? or am I asking to much from an '88 2 stroke?( got the idea from some other topics in the forum)
