yah, you'll never see me on a 400ex.
All the 400ex is good for is straight line drag'ng and maybe light trial riding, there is NO REVERSE. I'll be D@nmed if i'm gonna get off and push my quad backwards over tree stumps and ETC

Listen guys, I have both a 400EX and a scrambler. So you know im being frank here...

In a race its close up to around 30 or 40 MPH, then the scrambler runs out of gear and the ex pulls ahead... But the scrambler has the power to keep next to or ahead of the ex....so really all we are talking is a gear ratio issue that keeps the race coming out the same.

When i bought my 99 Scrambler 500 we were riding mostly in the mountains ( Woods, mud, rocks, hills..ect ). Most of my friends had Honda 300ex's and soon became envious of my greater top speed, accelleration, hill climing ability, ground clearance and many other factors. I found that i didn't need to use the 4wd as often is i would like to because all the quads i ride with are 2wd and simply avoid hazardous situations. This didn't really concern me all too much because i still did good otherwise. Now the tables are completely turned when most of my buddies upgraded to a Honda 400ex. Now they don't want to ride in the wood because the 400ex's don't have good ground clearance and no reverse. Now we are riding mostly in the pine barrens which is mostly sand. There is no need for me to have 4wd now and i am not to ashamed to admit that the Scrambler 500 is not the prefered machine for the sand. However i can go up sand hills that most others can't.

I was out last weekend and my buddy has a stock 2000 400ex and I have a stock 2001 scrambler 500 2X4. We drag raced about a quarter of a mile. I beat him both times by about 15 yards. Don't worry about beating your buddies. The scrambler rocks. I will be putting it on the radar gun this weekend. I will post my results.

Get the 400 and a stage 1 RCR kit, then go from there because that might be enough right there. I
like the difference it made in mine. I used to be a 4 stroke Honda rider but I love 2 strokes now.

You can even add bigger tires to a Scrambler to
make it go almost anywhere, fast! I'm going to
try some 25" tires on mine. The trails I ride have
some big ruts lately. Anybody who wants to ride
deep mud with a sport 2X4 has to get bigger tires
out back, or a winch!

Ask any mud racer what the key to running the pits is and they'll tell you "HP, 4X4, and the right tires". ATVs are the same on a smaller
scale of course.

If you love speed and absolutely love the trail you cant go wrong with the 400 scr.you may be a step behind your buddies, esp the suicide machine of a banshee. But you know ive rode with them all,and they thought they were leaving me until we encountered alittle mud.----00scram500----
