400sport vs 400 ex
#6
My two buddies have 400ex's with high comp. pistons and race cams. the one beat my when I had 13/34 gearing. when I went to 13/30 I smoked him. I do have an aaen 440 kit. The other 400ex is on alky and I have no chance untill I put my alky carb on!!!!!!!!!!!!

now now, we wouldnt be talking bout the "weak" little 400ex now would we? i have a 1996 xpress 400(same engine as scrammy 400), it is 100% BoneStock, no mods at all, still has stock tires on it. and i have never had a problem beating any 400ex. lol, isnt it pathetic when you can beat a "(so called) hi performance" quad , with a stock "utility" Quad. i love it.

Well.....I raced my EX (Stock) against a friend with a Scrammy 500 (basically stock with some clutch work) and this is how it went down. It was on a gravel road and off the line we both spun, but he jumped out with his front end around 5ft in front of mine. It stayed that way until we hit 3rd and I pulled on him pretty good through top speed. Once we got to the top speed I couldn't really tell if I was pulling away from him or not, so it looked pretty even. I beat him by probably 5 lengths in about a 1/4 mile.
I took the 500 Polaris for a ride to compare it to the 400 Sport that I used to have, and they felt pretty close performance wise (when my Sport was stock), but that is just going by the seat of my pants. It's hard to say though.
So, depending on distance, ground surface, rider skill (well, not much you can screw up with the Polaris, but the 400ex guy could blow it when he was shifting), and some other factors I'd say it's anyones game.
