The 400 is more easily modified, and cheaper too. Some will say the 400 is faster due to it being a 2-stroke. Some will say the 500 due to it being 100 ccs bigger. If you lined two stock bikes up, I would bet on the 400. I like them both.

who knows. This debate goes on and on.

400 owners say the 400

500 owners say the 500.

Go ask your dealer!

Stock vs stock: about the same - 500 might have slight edge

Modified vs modified: usually 400, depends on mods

According to the last two months of Dirt Wheels magazine "the 400 accelerates much faster and the top ends are almost identical". The March 2000 tested the 2000 Scambler 400 and it said it was faster and much cheaper to add performance mods. The 400 is reall a screamer when modified.

There was another subject like this a few weeks ago btw, but i'll say it again, i have raced a friends scrambler 400 and i usually beat him off the line but he'll start to gain on me after bout 100 yards bu will never pass me. Modified though, the 400 is faster, ATV Sport always radars the quads they test and the 500 has always been faster than the 400 from 0-30.

The 500 is faster than the 400 it never used to be, but I read a test article and the 500 beat the 400.

i had planned on buying a 500 but i am thinking about the 400 now, it is cheaper so for the price difference i will get a pipe and maybe a clutch kit that should make up for the 100cc differance.
