The magnum is a good quad, a bit on the heavy side, but they are very dependable and have the best automatic Automatic atv transmition there is. i own 2 polaris quads, and i never had a single problem out of iether one as long as ive had them (6 years now). im not sure how fast the magnums are tho. you might want to check out the Trailboss 330 ('02 or later) its practically the same thing, but with different plastics, less weight, and no front rack, and i think it costs less. 3799 sounds reasonable to me.
good luck..

what about the difference of chain verses the shaft drive? Also does the trailboss have a low range gear?

a chain is more work than a shaft you have to lube and tighten the chain every once in a whileand I forgot to tell you that the trail boss has better suspention. no the trail boss dosen't have a low gear.

Trailboss:

Chain drive, longer travel suspension, faster, cheaper. Chain must be lubed fairly often (I do mine every 50-100 miles on my Xplorer) and adjusted every oil change.

Magnum:

Heavier-duty, low range for towing/hauling bigger loads, big racks for hauling stuff, but heavier & slower. Also has maintanence-free shaft drive.

For trail running around, the TB is great

If you want to work the machine, or if you ride double, the Mag will handle that sort of thing better.

Basically, they have the same engine, and the Boss is in a 'trail bike' chassis, and the Mag is in a 'workhorse' chassis.
