wrapping the exhaust

The 2 main reasons for wrapping the exhaust are 1: keep radiated heat from other parts, and 2: by keeping the heat in the pipe, you increase the velocity of the exhaust, which increases the flow out, keeping the burnt gases out of the combustion chamber, allowing it to fill with fresh air/fuel mix, so you would see a small increase in power, depending on the motor and what was done to it.

I ended up with an 8 foot piece of header wrap from another project. I wrapped my pipe from the head to the front of the muffler. Noticed an immediate increase in acceleration. my buddies bought a 50 ft length of the wrap and did 4 quads with it. They noticed a difference too. Worth the effort and cheap power!!!

We used the heat wrap on our turbo race cars with great success. It will dramatically reduce temps, the only drawback is it will cause your pipe to rust out over a period of time. Just wet it and pull it tight as you wrap, once it dries it will pull extremely tight. Heat will no longer be a problem and helps keep the exhaust temp high in the pipe for better scavaging. not pretty but effective.

On those that replied where it helped performance, were those 2 strokes or 4? I have wrap left over from my 250 project that I could use on my 500 if it works. Also the company that sells the wrap I bought also sells a wrap coating that I bought as well. It sprays on and dries black. It would look much better than the rusty header thats on my 500 right now.
