Rear swing arm on 02 Scram 500??
#1
Ok..well my bro got his bike back after getting the case welded up cause of a broken chain. He's been out a few times only for a couple minutes since he got it back. Well tonight he went on a good run, and came back pretty pi$$ed off. He said the rear end was clunking and making sounds. SO i took off the side plastic peice that covers the swing arm bolt and the bolt fell right out. SOOO obviously the dealer didnt tighten the thing! OR..do these things usually come loose?
Anyways, i tightend it up..(it wasnt easy to find a socket that fit it! ) but it still seems like it has play. The play seems more on the belt side. Is there a bolt on this side that has to be tightend up? Can i get at it by just taking the belt cover off or is it somthing internal? Also on the other side, i tighted the bolt up pretty good..whats the torque specs on it? And do you have to hold the nut on the inside of the swingarm as your tightning it??
What other problems should i look at? He had to drive about 10kms on it like this..back in the deep woods..
Thanks!

The manual says that you are suppose to hold the pivot bushing with a vise and torque the nut to 120 ft lbs (163Nm) There is also suppose to be loctite 262 on it. The pivot bolts are suppose to have loctite on them to are are torqued to 150 ft lbs (207 Nm) If you need me to, I can scan and send the page in the manual to you

I'm new to this forum but you're absolutly right. USE THAT 262 LOCTITE or the entire machine will fall apart. It's always blue and has an expiration date on the bottle. All thread retainer products nave a date code and is only for about a year based on storage conditions.
By the way, 150 foot pounds and loctite is a HUGE amount of force holding that swing arm pin in place. If it's comes out after that, you're good!!
Good Luck,
Gene

Ok...i tighted ti down withoug holding the inner nut on the brake side. I'll use the torque wrench tomorrow on it. But after looking at the bolt, i know there was no locktight put on it..and if it came out that easy..damn it must ahve been loose!
Yeah if you can scan it and email it to me... scottbaker@accesswave.ca Thanks!

Yup..got it..damn didnt know you had to torque the inside nuts too..damn..they'd be hard to get at..must ahve to take off teh front sprocket.
But the bolts on the other side..you have to pull off the clutch cover to get at those eh?????

It left that part out of the manual. But I have heard people say that you have to take the clutch cover off to get to them. If it is going to be that big of a pain, it might be better to take it back to the dealer and let them know whats up and have then fix it. They should have known better to put loctite on those bolts
