Well fellows what do you all think of this wouldn't this be a great feature to have on an ATV just think how nice this would be going down steep hills stop and think how many accidents could have or will be avoided if this feature was added. I know everyone has gotten into a situation where they have almosted tipped or flipped backwards or forwards due to locking up the brakes...this would also be a nice feature for polaris especially the way the hold back is set up on the auto tranny when coming down really steep stuff I usually use to methods I either back it up and then hold the over ride button to get it into 4 wheel hold back or give it gas while I pump the brake you would have to own a polaris to understand these theorys so what is your thoughts on this one fellows...oh yes and if they did add this feature it would be even nicer if you could turn the anti lock on and off...

ATVing,
You and I are usually pretty close on our opionions,we are a little off on this one though.

We ATVers are suppose to use good judgement and not get ourselves into situations like you earlier mentioned with our quads.

With the price of quads allready SKYROCKETING,that outta add big dollars to the price of something that is allready way overpriced [quads]and will be of little use on a trail we use good common sense on.Cars and trucks?Yes.Quads?No.=====Bill

Hey Bill always enjoy reading your post how bad do you miss that Sport or should I ask your back that question hehehe where I know we are suppose to use common sense but how many of us do...I know I have got myself in situations I shouldn't to tell you the truth on a daily basis. Where I got the idea from was one day I was coming down this real steep place so I locked the brake and it eased off so easy so I got to thinking what if I had something like anti locks that would do this for me, I do agree it would probably be expensive to sport that is already over priced...I would love to see some poor guy start up a company that would sell stuff super cheap and put some of these pirates out of business, I do realize that research and starting up cost do cost money but if other manufactures can do it so can the atv after market producers. I still think it would be great for a break system that would automatically bring you down something safely for you...oh well I can dream can't I.

to do it u would need a different master cylinder and sensors at each wheel im sure that the it would add weight and lots of cost to a bike

Yes,I'll admit it to,im sometimes not the most perfect ATVer out there either, but I sure do try and think of safety first.

It sure is hard not to show off when you see that most perfect hill or mud hole. And besides,I like being

If Polaris added anti-lock brakes I wouldn't be able to do that famous Polaris Power slide with the rear brakes. It's a real hoot trying to hotrod a sportsman and trying to slide the rear through corners. Found out by accident when I was trying to keep up with my buddy on his dirtbike. I went to powerslide the corner by using the rear brake and worked a little to well. The rear tires totally stopped spinning for the rest of the slide till I completed my Starsky and Hutch 180 degree u-turn when I was actually trying to pull off the General Lee tail slide. I had to make my own tire screetching sounds on dirt. I still haven't figured out how Bo and Luke did it with the General.

Wow mds seems you put yours through about the same thing I do some people really don't know how wild you can get on a sportsman till you put it to the limit, some people complain about the handling of the cornering of the IRS but when you get use to the way it handles I really find it easier to control than a solid axle...and on the dukes real slick tires and a emergency break you work by hand, I use to have a VW that would do a 180 easily, you should have saw those onion tires hehehe

Hi!

In my experience, with off-road trucks, ABS doesn't work that well on dirt or on gravel. The moment the sensors indicate that one wheel is blocked, it relieves the brake on that wheel. And on dirt or gravel, the wheels block almost immediately you press the breaks any harder.
And ATVs tend to block the wheels a lot faster too because of the lower weight. The experience I had with several Opel Frontera (Isuzu Rodeo), is that you have to be very careful on how you break on loose dirt, because if the ABS kicks in, you're not stopping!
I think the brakes Polaris have are pretty good, because it takes some strength to activate, so you have lots of sensibility, and it's easier not to block the wheels - and the front/rear breaking power distribution is pretty balanced.

Just my 2¢...

Bye!

I read an article in moter trend about 4X4 trucks and the writers were suggestion putting an option on the 4X4 that would let you turn the Antilock brakes off. They say when you are in dirt and you lock up the brakes, the dirt that piles up in front of the tires help you to stop better. Maybe we are better off without Antilock brakes???

However, If you want anti lock brakes, you could always buy a HONDA. Once those drum brakes get good and wet, you can't make them lock up.

I agree with the other guys here. As and avid off roader of trucks before I bought my ATV, I know that anti-lock does not perform on loose surfaces. It actually take longer for a vehicle with anti-locks to stop on gravel or sand, then it does for a vehicle without anti-locks.
I have seen this from exprerience. And you can see editors of magazines say the same thing, especially when they do tests.
