4x4 troubles
#1
Hi. I have a 1996 400 4x4 and noticed that the right front wheel doesn't go into 4wd when I push in the 4x4 button. When the 4x4 button is pushed in and you rev the machine up, the quad really pulls to the left because it's gripping with the rears plus only the left front wheel.
Is there an electrical plug that could be pulled out or is the 4x4 operated by mechanical means (from a gearbox etc)?
Any answers would really be appreciated!!
Thanks

First thing check the hud fluid level or better yet change the hub oil in both sides. If that doesnt help make sure you are getting juice to the armature plate and that your hub bearings are ok.Your 4x4 is opperated by a clutch in your hub not anywhere else.

I checked out the wiring--seems OK. Didn't drain hub yet. Jacked it off the ground and 3 wheels drove then the bad one started on it's own. I couldn't stop it by hand so assumed it was just stuck. Let it down and tried it. Same thing... only 3 drive. Will check clutch in the morning. Might be back for more questions.
Thanks to all for the info. Al

Dirty, low, or bad fluid is the cause of most 4x4 problems. Start with the cheap stuff. Whay make more work for yourself if you don't need to. You can use ATF Type F or Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (the synthetic seems to work better) in place of the Polaris hub fluid if you want to.

I don't have a tech manual so am wondering how to get at the clutch. I did drain the hub and it had very fowl smelling oil so ran it out the allen plug. I don't have type F auto trans fluid but have Crysler and muli brand fluid. Will this work? Also, when filling, should the fluid be right up to the hole or just 1/2 the hub. There wasn't much in it before I ran it out (thats probably why it stunk so much. Burnt oil smell.)
Anyway, I assume that the disk brake stuff has to come off then the hub then maybe I see the clutch?
Also, should the clutch engage when you turn on the key and push the 4x4 button? This machine doesnt on either side. It seems that it has to be going forward first. Even the "good" side.
(does it show that this is my 1st ATV ? After running it for the last month or so, I'm really wishing I had one for the last 30 years of running cattle instead of a horse!!)

The Polaris system needs some forward movement to engage the hubs. Also, it must have the 4wd switch on, the ignition switch on, and the tranny in either low or high range (or reverse if you hold in the override button).
First 2 things to do:
Change the hub fluid. Don't use the Chrysler stuff, it may not be compatible with the hub fluid. Use either type F synthetic or the Polaris hub fluid. If the oil smelled rank, change the other side, too as the oil there is probably just as old.
If that doesn't get the hub to work properly, be sure that electricity is getting to the magnet in the hub. Trace the wire coming out of the strut body back & be sure all connections are tight.
If you still can't get it to work, reply back & will try to help more.

PS I can relate to the ATV being much more convenient than walking or a horse!

I drained, cleaned the hub parts and changed oil in the hub and still no right front 4x4. I have to now check power to clutch. If I use a 12V test light to the wires going into the strut, should the 4x4 button be in and the key on? (I'm surprised at how small the wires are going into the hub!! Any elect. clutches I have on the farm have much heavier guage wires running them).
If the wires do have power, do I get at the clutch from inside the hub or the rubber boot covering the axel?
Thanks
