Default gearcase oil?

The gear case takes 1 quart of polaris chain case oil.. you can find it at your dealer...

Sometimes when you change the oil, some oil will stay in the trans, and it will not take a full quart but that is normal...

Hope this helps....

Humm, I would not run it low, My buds tb 250 will leak oil from the dip stick the o ring seal is not the best... I would add some regular oil maybe some 10w30 or something like that till you get the right oil, Having oil (even if its not the rite type) is better than having low oil... You should be fine with it full, I would NOT run it low!!

I would not risk riding it without the proper oil in it. Having the wrong oil can cause problems in some cases. The oil in the trans is more like a Transmission oil rather than motor oil. The only other oil that I know of that can be used in there is Amsoil Series 2000 Synthetic Chaincase Lubricant. I you could find something similar to that MAYBE you could get away for today, but I would advise to just park it and wait until you can get the proper oil in it. Just my $.02 I wouldn't risk it.

Hey BBS, My friends tb 250 when he got it the moron that had it put 80-90 gear oil in the trans... It has lots of play in the trans now after that.... In fact the people at my dealer are some dumb they told me to use 10w30 in it...

That 80-90 messed something up. The trans uses a chain and need a chaincase lube in order to protect it. Not to mention, th Polaris and Amsiol have moly added to provide even more protection. DO NOT put 80-90 gear oil in it, for sure. I have never heard of using 10w-30 though? The only ones that everybody that I have talked to have said to use is either Polaris or Amsoil. But maybe 10w-30 works? I dunno. It is not made to go into the trans so I would not recommend doing it. Trailrider, have you tried the 10w-30? Any ill affects?

No i have not tryed 10w30 when i bought my quad the dealer told me to run 10w40 in the engine 10w30 in the trans and use polaris stuff in the hubs and front gear case... Well i am not a dumb *** i knew that engine oil is for engines not trannys I think they were stuck on yamaha cause thats what their trannys take... I only have used polaris stuff in the quad so far.. I use 80-90 in the front gear case...
I was goin to try Amsoil but i dont know much about it and were to find it? Also i use old motor oil to oil my chain, i know you use something else were do you get it and how much is it?

WOW! Your dealer is dumb!! You need to use the 0W-40 motor oil in the engine cuz you need the thinner oil to reach the overhead cam better. The funny thing is, the front gear case can take ANY GL5 synthetic 80-90 gear oil. Not just Polaris. And there is a lot of substitutes for the hubs too. Maybe they had a lot of trannys sitting around that they wanted to replace I can see using 10w-30 in Yammy trannies as long as they are compatable with the clutch. But the Polaris is a completely different system. I hope you neve have to take your quad there for repairs Check out Amsoil's website. They ahave been around for a long time and make a lot of great oils that are race proven. My dealer carries Amsoil for the 2 strokes, but not for the 4 strokes. SO after months of searching, I happen to be at a place called The Snowmobile Warehouse and found 0w-40 Amsoil Synthetic oil, as well as filters, Series 2000 chaincase lubs, grease, and so on. Once spring comes around I will switch it over to Amsoil. I have Mobil 1 in there now for winter storage. On my chain, I use Triflow. It has teflon im it and works great. I rarely have to clean my chain cuz nothing sticks to it. I also spray it on my shocks, tie rods, shift linkage and so on. It isn't cheap though, at about $8 a can. But you can find it at Carquest or I have also heard that Walmart carries it.

Thanks for the link, Yeah my dealer is full of ****, they really dont know what their doing thankfully i know how do just about anything so i dont think i would need to take it their for repairs... I knew their was a reason why polaris whanted you to use 0w40 just did not know it till now.... I think i am going to switch to amsoil... My dealer tryed to talk me out of buying a polaris for about 30min... I could not believe how rude they are and when i go there to buy an oil filter they are like "O you got one of those polaris quads" They hate polaris their...
