Default New to the ATV World

Hey guys got a few questions for ya. Just got a 2003 Polaris 700 Twin.
1. I don't have AWD in reverse, is this normal?
2. I got a snow plow as well, is there a way that I could put more down pressure on the plow to cut through packed snow. It is a Cycle Country plow
3. When I am in reverse and my wheels are spinning (like when I get stuck) after a certain speed it will make a loud "pop", sounds like a shotgun going off.
4. Also is there anywhere I could get a gas gauge, or a cap with a needle in it?

Thanks for any help with these problems

First thing - Welcome to the group.

We don't get much snow where I'm from, so the snow plow stuff has to be answered by the Northerners.

Your AWD does not work in reverse unless you hold the Override button, same reason you probably get the "pop" in reverse - the reverse limiter is keeping you from gaining more than "safe" engine RPM's as the Polaris is capable of going as fast in reverse as it will in forward.

Hope this helps

ps- the Override button will also bypass the reverse limiter to let you get faster reverse speed.

For the plow stuff you will have to figure out how to add some ballast to the plow. As far as the guage well anything you find that will fit the fill hole will be very inacurate due to the tank design. it will show empty when you have more then 1/2 a tank left.

The rest of you questions were answered in the post above.

Goto http://www.montanajacks.com/productgroup.asp?33=156 there they have a weight bar that will mount on top of your plow. It is designed to fit the Warn plow but will fit other makes as well. It says you can add up to two of them for more weight.

Loud pop is probably the reverse rev limiter. A saftey feature which limits higher revs of RPMs to prevent you from going too fast in reverse. In my experience of ATV utilities, snow plowing is not fun when the snow gets too deep. The ATV is not as heavy as a garden tractor. That makes it want to ride on the snow more. Also tractors these days have the plows mounted on a hydralic lifts which applies pressure down and uses the weight of it to push down. I know some people who have added weight to the plow and use a winch to pull it up. This was helpful to them. In my local paper yhou always see the plows and the mowers for a lot cheaper because of the owners having bad experiences.

Good Luck

Just my opinion but I really do not think that Quads are yet a truley good alternative for plowing and mowing.

Welcome to the forums.
Yes it is normal for the awd not to work in reverse, however if you push the reverse override before you hit the
throttle it will engage the awd. It will also keep the quad from backfiring. I once did that at my grandmothers while I was plowing her 350 ft driveway. I backed down the driveway pretty fast holding the override button, but I released the button before I released the throttle. It sounded like a small caliber revolver when it backfired, I had to laugh a little when it happened it sort of startled me. I'm not sure about the weights that were discussed in previous posts, but if there isn't something out there like that you could always make something to add some weight. Around here the quads are pretty popular for snow removal. They do a good job, and are alot more fun than many other methods of snow removal. And yes do to the design of the gas tank you really can't get a gas gauge that is accurate. Have fun and be safe, and welcome to the forums.

Thanks for your help guys. My Polaris didn't come with an owner's manual, I probably would have figured out the reverse problem even before I had one, o-well. Thanks again

Congrats on the purchase - I am sure you will be very happy with it. Just incase you don't know already, make sure you never switch the AWD button on when the rear tires are slippping. You can turn the switch on and off at any speed, but the rear tires cannot be spinning when you do it or you will tear a lot of stuff up.
