Will a Scrambler work?
#1
I own a Polaris Expedition 425 and have never used a Polaris automatic for any work-type tasks. Therefore, I don't know what the automatics will or will not do when it comes to working them.
Will a Scrambler 500 pull a mower at 5 mph (or slower) without a problem? What about small trailers up and down hills? Is the "low gear" of the Magnum and Sportsman essential for such tasks? Any comments from experienced owners are appreciated.
Regrettably, Polaris not only got out of 5 speed AWD's but also dropped all 400-500 utility ATVs other than the Sportsman series. I want a sport/utility quad with a rear straight axle and that rules out the Sportsman. It looks as though the Scrambler 500 is the closest ATV which will meet my engine size and suspension requirements.
Will it work? If not, can it be modified to work?

The scram has the torque for the up hill pulling, I dunno about pulling a mower at less than 5mph that might be kinda hard on the PVT... I do know this you can get a SP-500 trans off ebay pertty cheap and from what i am told it will drop right in the scram frame and you would have low range..
About the autos, they work very well and can do just about anything....
Hope this helps...

Actually, you can put an Xplorer trans in it. The Xplorer has the chain drive. If you are going to be towing at low speeds like that, low gear would definately help. The scram isnt exactly made for that kinda work. YOu may be able to change the springs and weights in the clutch and that would help.

don't know about the Scrammy for that kinda work.
i use a '96 Magnum425 to pull a 44" heavy duty Polaris brush cutter(Swisher makes it for Polaris) and trim about 30-40 Acres of hilly, off-camber terrain. it's usually very hot out and the ATV works hard. i couldn't imagine mowing in anything other than low range. i'm quite sure the Magnum would burn-up if i tried high range.
it's tough to say if a Mag330 will do the job. how about that FANTASTIC 500APV? it has that neat dump body, special "turf" mode for mowing w/o ripping-up the lawn, and a straight axle. i think the tow hitch comes standard to. i think you should try one.
if you were to re-concider IRS, the SP500 are selling cheap in my area. and you can get the Warn2500lb winch for only $49!!
try-out that 500APV. i think it'll hit the mark for you.

The Professional seris has a straight axle on them I believe. Then you could have the 500 with the Hi/Lo gearing and your straight axle. Jay

Would it work? Yes. Is it the best choice? No. It is considered a sport quad. Not to mention your rear end would be very sore if you had much mowing to do, even with the new improved seat on the '04 Scrambler. You can, as previously stated, get a tranny with low range to solve most of the problems. For a work/tow machine you will want engine braking, and that too can be added. Your stuck with a not so comfortable ride.
