do you need to be moving on a bike to do a plug test or can i just leave it in neutral? if i can how long should i run it before i kill it and check the plug.

In reality you should be moving when plug check is done. Get a long socket to make it quicker. Get 3-4 good plugs to check the throttle positions. Once warmed up go about 1/4 throttle for about 100 yards( or longer if you can). stop and turn off and use plug tool to loosen and the socket to unscrew quickly. If inner white porcelin is tan to light chockolate then you are good. Then do it half throttle and full throttle. Yes it sounds like a pain but it works and it is very important. I usually check my idle color too. This can help with lag if it is to rich at idle.

I dont want to sound stupid but this is my first 2 stroke. Does this plug check apply to a 2 stroke also? I did this on my 01 arctic cat and it helped tune her up. Now i have a 99 sport 400 and it smokes a lot when it is started up. After some riding it stops smoking and runs good. I was wondering if it is too rich at idle or low end? Is a plug test the way to go? I did check the compression and i have 126 psi. My dealer told me 130 was perfect and 125-130 was great for a 99.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I love mine. I went from a 250 4 stroke to my sport. I only had the 250 from march 2003 to August 2003 when I sold it and picked up the sport. She is a blast to ride. Stock except for the oil injector block off kit which I would recomend taking off and premixing. When I did mine the cable was broke in the pump housing and it was just pumping the same ratio all the time. I got real lucky with. Im looking for tires now. Im going to get some ITP Holeshots for all four.

Let me know if you get it.

Im in Western Mass. If anyone is close to here let me know.
