#1
Just bought the dam thing and while driving it home the Speedometer went dead...Found A wire had caffed coming from the battery between the frame and the harness , was apparently like that from day1...Now have no AWD light or any speedometer function..Dealer wants $430 CDN for new one... Being on limited income way to much money...Is their any way to bypass the speedometer so AWD will function??Or any place I can purchase a used one..Great forum Thanks in advance....

why don't you just splice a new piece of wire in? all that happened was a wire got chafed? i know what you mean, i just had to buy one today and it was $220US, if you need one i can get another for that price. most i have found were $250US.

MJ,
Please explain why the speedometer needs to be replaced instead of simply repairing the damaged wiring. Also, what year is your Sportsman?
I just had a similar problem with my 2002 SP500: the AWD function, high beam, and instrument lights all quit at the same time. I eventually found that a factory splice separated on a common ground wire. Polaris wires things a bit strange compared to the machines I'm used to so it took a while with the wiring schematic to figure it out.
Give us some more info and maybe we can help

The model is 2000 sp.500 Ho
The short I belive fried the speedometer, and neutral light.
The wire was repaired..and I checked the voltage going to the Speedometer..from the harness it has the coreect values as stated in the repair manual..Yet I have not speedometer function, lights , odometer, Also have no AWD...no light ..Now I am assuming that since the speedometer is not functioning neither is the feed from the speedometer to the awd..Now the speedometer I can live without ( $430 cdn) but the awd I cannot.. Is their away to enable the awd through either a splice or feed from somewhere??? How can I be sure that if I replace the speedometer the awd will function??

I ALSO HAVE A 2000 500. I HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM BUT MY SPEEDO CONTINUED TO WORK. TO OVERIDE EVERYTHING I CONNECTED THE PURPLE WIRE TO A HOT(RED) WIRE. THIS SEEMS TO OVERRIDE THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. WHAT I NOW HAVE TO DO IS HOLD THE YELLOW REVERSE OVERIDE BUTTON IN AT ALL TIMES(I DO THIS WITH A PLASTIC TIE). WHEN I WANT AWD I SWITCH OVER AS USUAL. TO BE SAFE I ALSO PUT A CIRCUIT BREAKER IN BETWEEN THE PURPLE AND RED WIRE SO IF IT GETS HOT IT WILL JUST TRIP OUT UNTIL IT COOLS DOWN. I HAVE BEEN ON A BUNCH OF RIDES IN SNOW, MUD, PLOWING ALL MY NEIGHBORS OUT AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!!
HOPE THIS HELPS. YOU CAN AT LEAST TRY IT TO SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU.
