Default Feel of the SP 700 transmittion

I am fairly new to ATV'g and have been riding an Outlander 400. I just picked up an 04 Sportsman 700 so my wife and I can ride. The SP 700 seems to want the engine RPM up higher than the Outlander before it really engages?

Is this normal? Tomorrow I will look at the tach and see exactly where it is.

It feels a bit sluggish on the tranny until I add a good dose of throttle, then it really goes strong?

Jim!

That is characteristic of the primary clutch. You can tune it to your liking or buy an aftermarket clutch. I am far from a clutch expert, but probably the easiest way to get the clutch to engage at a lower RPM is to put a lighter spring in. But, before you do that, just consider that while you may get the sooner engagement that you like, that you might upshift a bit faster than before (and possibly a bit sooner than the engine would prefer). If you just went one spring lighter, I think you would be just fine.

DO a lot of Sportsman owners do clutch mods?

If so, why doesn't Polaris just build it the way that people generally want it?

Is there an advantage to the way it is setup right now?

The 700's have always had strange and high rev engagement and many have upgraded with a clutch kit with the exception of the new 700EFI which is spot on. The rest of the Polaris lineup seems fine also.

Are the 600s like that? The reason that I ask is that I drove a 600 and do not remember it doing the same thing.

There was a thread on here about this once before, I think the guys name was markie, but other people said that when this situation was brought up to the dealer they said that there is different settups for different alltitudes. The dealer can make these changes to a new quad. The title of the thread is "polaris needs to back there atvs better" do a search and read what this guy went through. I hope you have a dealer that will work with you, if not find a new dealer (sometime a little drive is worth it)

Try the EPI SPORT UTILITY clutch kit..this seems to work the best for us...Very easy to install and you will notice a big difference...
