Default Beat DOWN!

Okay, here is the deal. I purchased a '95 Scrambler 400 4x4 a couple of years ago and have not done much with it. It despirately needs TLC. This is my plan as of yet.

Change fluids and filters
I need to work on the starter, I believe I got water in it, new brushes?
One of my front hubs had no fluid in it and I HOPE that is why my 4x4 seems intermitent, though the other should be engaging, right? So if my electrical system is jacked that could be it too, correct? I am trying to learn as much as I can but right now I don't have the $$ to do a lot.

What other things can/should I do to help keep my Scrammy happy? Anything that could help it run better? I read something about clutch alignment and different springs. I may consider a clutch kit later. I really like the Scrammy but am hoping I didn't f' up and get a bad one. Sometimes I miss having a clutch and feel like getting a cRatpor or EX or something but from what I have read, I can make the Scrammy pretty fast.

One more thing, the lights are jacked and I am NOT paying $59 a pc for stock lights. It looks like I could get some aftermarket ones and have better light anyway. What are you guys using? Any pics? I am considering some "tuner" style driving lights mounted between where the front fender and "hood" hump come together, on the bumper tubes.

HELP!!

One other question, how do you tell if the belt is bad or burnt? I checked mine and it looked good to me. I it was clean and not tattered in the least.

I have a lot to learn.

OK this is how I would handle it.
Change the antifreeze and counterbalance oil.
Be sure to let your cooling system "burp" or you will find yourself overheated on the trail.
Second the side that had no fluid tear it down and check to see if you have a seal bad or if the strut is worn.
The 4 wheel drive engaging intermittently sounds to me like you have an armature plate that needs replaced. Easy replacement just watch how you take the front end apart. You will find it as it is a thin piece of steel that has three raised spots on it to lock it in place behind the hubs. Check your bearing since there was no oil in there.
I personally would tear down both hubs and check them.
Armature plates are part number 5211148 for and 04 and are the same for yours. Check with a Polaris Dealer for the proper torque. New ones are around 110 inch pounds and require you to rotate the hub then back it off then retorque unsure about older models.
Here is a blowup of the hub.

http://www.partsland.com/index.cgi?N...WHEEL-ASSEMBLY

Hub Fluid comes in 8 oz bottles and will do both front hubs Part Number 2871654 cost about 2.25 a bottle and is worth it.
Pop the cover off the automatic oil pump on the left hand side of the engine. Check the bell spring. Lubricate the shaft and check it for rotation. Fill the hub with the plug out at the 4 or 8 oclock positions until you have fluid run out of the hole. DO NOT SQUEEZE the bottle or you will blow out a seal just let gravity feed it in. Usually only takes about 2 to 4 ounces.
Lubricate all three sections of the throttle cable.
If the bike was stored with fuel you may even want to check the float bowl for varnish and sludge. Polaris carbs are easy to clean take the bowl off and get a good powerful cleaner and clean it up.
Next I would drain my tranny fluid and change it. Use only Polaris Tranny Fluid in there as I have not found one yet that keeps the silent chain happy.
Grease everything and push out all the old grease you can. Ride it grease it again.
Chain(s) if they have been dry for two years I would say unless you soak it for a long time the orings have gone hard and probably will need replacing. I use Kawasaki Chain oil but there are other soaker oils out there that are excellent for the chain.
Change the spark plug so you can get an idea of how the bike is running now after you have it back in form.
Electrical problems are usually in the are of the controls on the handle bars. If it has set and you are good at tinkering the controls can be taken apart and cleaned but be careful as there are bearings and springs galore in the switches..

Go here for blowups of your bike and if you need parts check the local dealer or you can order from this place as well

Hope this information gets you back on the road.....

I forgot the starter.... Loose it get a block off plate and pull start it. If the machine is right a half pull on the rope usually fires a 400 up..
But if your set on fixing it then you need to check the bendix as well while you have it apart. Brushes sometimes on a Polaris stick then burn up if that is the case you need to take your whole starter apart and clean it out to make sure other things have not burnt up as well.

I paid $40 for my Navigator 55wt simulated HID driving lights. I just wired them into the existing wiring so that the factory switch still works
