Whitedog,
Remove the shift linkage completely off the trans and try to put it into reverse that way... By doing this without the linkage it should tell you if the problem is internal or its linkage adjustment..

If you cannot get it to engage by the shift shaft, the reverse needle bearing may be out on it - when the bearing goes, the gear cannot engage the output shaft. #30 needle bearing - Reverse gear

As far as your Predator reverse problems - After many years of R&D and millions of $$$, I have come up with the ultimate Universal Fred Flinstone (tm) Reverse kit (fits all years Predator, Banshee, etc..... any ATV/ATC without factory reverse) - the only information needed is your shoe size. - there are different models/price ranges to fit anybody - from the economy flip flop model to the premium boot model.
I've thought about selling them on Ebay - But, I think I will try Billy Mays first!

It is inside. I had the same thing happen to my 97 Scrambler 400 4x4. One of the gears inside was ate up pretty good. I took the tranny out myself, took it to the deealer, the replaced the gear and I think it ended up around 200 bucks. When mine first started doing that, one time it would work, the next time it wouldn't. I pulled my hair out for a couple weeks trying to figure it out before I ended up pulling the tranny.
