500 HO
#1
I have a 2000 sportsman 500 and was wondering if changing the cam over would make it like a HO? I have also heard that HO's have a compression realease to help the starter out and the nonHO's don't, thus creating problems with the starter not lasting.Any body have any insight on this, I would really like to keep the one I have since I know what I got , but I also want more power! lol

The HO is actually a combination of the camshaft and the carburetor.
As far as I know, all the 500's had the compression release - it is a centrifugal system that as RPM's increase, the ball on the exhaust lobe retracts into the camshaft.
I am converting my Wife's '98 SP500 to HO, the camshaft failed and I bought an HO camshaft, then got an HO carb off ebay - I had to buy the intake boot (attaches carb to head) from Polaris as HO carb is larger. But first I am going to compare it to a friend's HO with just the 500 carb, just to see what the difference is.
