Ok,,I'm getting ready to buy some atv boots...So I defenetly want the atv sole on them...I'm debating between two pair...the thing is is that I don't want to be wearing gold on my feet..but I do want something that has some flex so its half way comfortable and I want something that is going to last a while too...I wont be wearing them 24/7 so don't want to spend huge $$$$..I was looking at the ARC corona boots which have the atv sole and are dirt cheep at 80 bucks...or should I dig in the couch for another 80 bucks and buy the alpinestar tech 4 boots??? If the tech 4's are defenetly worth the extra 80 then I will probably get those but if they don't show up the ARC boots then I would rather just get the 80 ARC coronas....so what do you think???

I have found that the scrambler provides very good foot protection with the floorboards. Now if you were to put nerfs on or remove the floorboards all together and just use pegs, then I could see investing in a pair of boots. Me personally, I find that a pair of steel toe CATS do a great job. Then you can powerwash them when you are done!!!

the boots have many purposes: they're waterproof, they provide more support for your ankles to prevent breakage, they double as shin guards and the sole (sp?) is a very hard compound to prevent from getting worn away by the pegs, the jerseys and other gear is really just for racing to show team colors, plus the racers name and number but they're also good for lessening the chance of road rash when you wreck.

also....about the boots, make sure they fit good and wear the right socks or you'll end up with a bunyon on the top of your foot that hurts like hell every time you shift, or walk for that matter, I know this from experience.

I just bought a set of the Thor T30 boots with the ATV sole. I like them so far and they are pretty comfortable considering they're brand new and stiff.
user3567,
I'm pretty new to this ATV stuff myself but after riding a few forest trails with some relatively difficult terrain I quickly realized that one trip over the handlebars or off the side of my new Polaris Ute would make for a pretty miserable event in my opinion. I'm 42 and don't heal like I used to when I was a younger buck. I went out and bought a set of Thor Core pants, jersey, gloves, chest protecter, boots, and a full face HJC MX helmet. The material that the pants are made from is a very heavy ballistic nylon with panels of spandex and reinforcements all over. No road rash coming through those if I bite the dust. The jersey's are lightweight with lots of cut panels to allow for freedom of movement and cooling. I wear a long sleeve t-shirt underneath. The boots were explained above and I think the gloves are obvious. I got the full face MX helmet for good reason too. I have perfect teeth and have all my life. I had the unfortunate event of loosing one of my top front teeth due to a weird fracture that I nor the dentist could figure out, it was just there one day and couldn't be repaired. If you enjoy your front teeth like I do you'll want to keep them. A dental implant cost me about $4000 out of pocket, insurance only covers the extraction of the old tooth. Imagine unexpectedly hitting those handlebars and loosing two, three, or more teeth! I came close to spending what another new Polaris would have cost me on that one tooth, think about that times 2 or 3. Eeeek, I'd rather not! Lastly, Dude, the clothes just look cool too!!! I have the Apls Tech 4 boots. I like them alot. They are well made and provide good support. Mine are 4 years old and holding up very well. A friend has the Thor boots and he likes them also. He is on his second set. The leather on Alps is better quality. Sida makes a pair with a quad sole but costs alot more. For the money, the confort and the durability I would go with the tech 4. Just my too cents.

For the new guys, riding boots are probably the most important piece of safety equipement after a helmet(of course). They are good for the instep of your foot(for cushion on hard landings) as well as they help those of you that have to kick start your steed, like EX said they offer good shin protection, but the MOST important aspect of riding boots is ANKLE PROTECTION. Now for UTE quad guys this isn't quite as important, but for sport quad guys its VERY important. Ever land real hard and bottom out your suspension? It really kills your ankles doesn't it? With a good pair of riding boots this impact is substantially lessened. And probably the biggest reason is, if you ever(yes I know NONE of us ever do something stupid and bail off the quad) get parted with your quad the ankle support helps you from shattering your ankles. Think of the damage done to your ankle if you get pitched from your quad at even 25mph and happen to land on your foot/ankle somehow?
Riding boots are MUCH more of a neccesity in the dirtbike world as we fall/plant our foot for balance alot more often than quad riders, but they are still a very good idea for quad riders as well. For me......I do enough stupid things to where I need all the protection I can get. You don't have to get a "top of the line" boot, any of the boots offered by the riding gear companys should be enough for recreational riding. But for racers I'd recommend shellin' out the extra dough for quality boots. Trust me!! $300 for a good pair of boots is MUCH better than thousands of dollars for reconstructive surgery, pins, and metal that the doctor will use to rebuild your ankles.....
