Scrambler 500 performance upgrades
#1
I recently purchased a 2004 Scrambler 500 4X4, it is quick and relatively agile. I bought this so I would not have to purchased two quads. A couple of my buddies run a 650 Praire and a 500 Vinson, another couple of buddies run a V-force and a 400EX. As you can see I figured the 500 would run with both packs adequately. My biggest issue so far is keeping up with the 400 EX let alone the V-force. I can jump the Scrmmy buyt I am far more comfortable doing so on the Honda 400EX. Is there any performance and weight loss programs I can put my scrammy on. I found a few things on the net, but most recent parts listings in ATV mags seem to have forgotten the scrmbler's existnence.
Some thing I was thinking about
- removing the footrests and retrofitting an aluminum hoop with netting (not sure how stupid this idea is?) to reduce weight
- Changing stock rims? Any suggestions
- White brothers exhaust, says its for up to 2003 models. I bet I could make it work.
- Aeen Clutch kit, is there any others? Perhaps a better one
- I want to see if I can make the belt area water proof but not sure if sportsman cover will do the trick.
- I saw a DG Bumper on a guys scrammy in this forum but I have yet to see is advertised anywhere
- also saw an aluminum handlebar, again on the bike mentioned above, I suppose this is not quad specific
- I tyhink the back shock could be replaced with a lighter one buty I am not sure.
There is one company on the web that offers engine mod stages - for Scrambler 500s. Does anyone have any experience with these products.
I know I am asking alot but I figure if I lose 20 pounds and gain 10 HP I sould be in the hunt with the Prairie and the V-force performance, and still have fun on the track and the mud.

You can go wrong with HPD, Aaen, or the White Brothers exhaust. I have the HPD full exhaust and really like the improved power and torque. A K&N and Outerwears from Rocky MT ATV is a good improvement. To let more air in, the HPD air box mod is a good bet for about 2 more hp and better throttle response. A TEAM Performance roller secondary clutch from HPD will improve your acceleration as well. Aaen is the only company making or doing mods for the 500 HO motor. WEB cams has a cam for it too though. Four Stroke Tech has a 600cc and 628cc big bore kit. They dont have a website though. As for the DG bumper, Rocky MT sells that too. Hot Seat Performance sells nerf bars for it. You can also modify DG Alloy Banshee nerfs to fit. If you like to jump, I would highly suggest a chain tensionor from HPD. You cant go wrong with Douglas .190 aluminum rims. Oh, the White Bros exhaust should fit your 04 as well. It is a good idea though to get your pipe and clutch kit from the same manufacture because they are tuned together, but you can settle for two seperate brands. The difference betwen the sportsman and scrambler belt covers is that the intake and exhaust snorkel for the sportsman is located higher. Just make sure your seal on the cover is good and you should be fine. If you get water in there, just pull the drain plug and rev it up in neutral for a few minutes. My handle bars are Renthal aluminum bars with the Banshee bend. I also got them from Rocky MT. Any 7/8" bar will fit. If you don't like your rear shock, you can replace it with a Fox rear shock from the 00-03 scramblers and for the best performance have it revalved by PEP for your weight and riding style. The WORKS rear shock is around $700. You can replace your front struts with WORKS or FOX struts. Hot Seat carries the FOX struts and duel rate springs I hope this answered some of your questions

I have an 03 scrammy and just recieved my white bros. pipe today, but I don't have the quad right now so I will have to get back to you on that. I also ordered a dalton clutch kit from rick Ritter with a kevlar belt. I really hope these things wake this up a bit!!! It will probably be this weekend before I get a chance to work on it but I will let you know.
Purepolaris sells a fox rear shock replacement for the stocker on the 04. Don't know whey they would sell that one on there but you gotta watch the bottom line

Most of what BBS said. He meant you can't go wrong with Douglas .190 rims. ITP .190 rims are good too. Here is a link to Aaen for Hi Comp piston and porting. Find some lighter tires as well. Let us see it as you go and when it's all done.
Edit: Oh yeah welcome to the forums! and congrats on the Scrammy!

just my opinion, but I am not happy with my .190 douglas rims. they feel more like .019 I bent one the 1st day I got em, and that was on my raptor, and I didnt recall hitting a darn thing,,,,,,The Scrammy will only get tough steel rims in the future,,,hate to say it.
