If you've never opened your belt case up (which you should have by now), this is what it looks like...
It's a pretty ingenious system IMHO, you can see how the weights make a large difference in shifting and how the primary spring is involved.
As the clutch spins the weight start moving out due to centrifugal force, this forces everything out against the primary spring which compresses based on whatever strength it is. As it spins and compresses the belt gets forced up changing your "gearing"...all the way up is top gear, all the way down is low gear.
Just be careful if you ever look at it in operation....if something gets caught in any of the moving parts you're gonna be sorry!
The Heelclicker website has some great step-by-step pics of changing a clutch...
It's not as difficult to work on this as I thought (now I just have to settle on a clutch kit to buy)....fairly simple piece of machinery....it's good to get familiar with your quad and how it works!
