If someone has a service manual the minimun belt width is listed. On a 500 the belt width changes from about .032 to .06 inches, it actually given a minimim width ai 1.125 inches. This might be the same for a 700? It sounds like a lot of guys are switching belt so they must be close.

It's worth the $35 to buy a service manual on e-bay

I still think it sounds like you have something going on with your secondary clutch. I would replace the belt first and if it does not help start looking at that clutch. It is easy to get apart, just make sure you mark both halves before you pull the snap ring off or oyu won't know where your pretension is at. Also you will need another set of hands to gety it back together

Well, I checked the secondary clutch by putting my old belt on and running it in nuetral. the primary compressed and the secondary opened up. it seems that the belt is riding down into the secondary and high on the primary. I checked the belt width and it is about 1 1/8 inch on the thicker end. Could my belt be the culprit? What do I check on the secondary clutch? Should I take the clutches apart and lightly sand them? Thanks for all your input, it really helps!

is your engine responsive to throttle position. ie-----wide open throttle yields strong engine response and rpms? or you getting an engine bog or sluggish response? this will help greatly in pin pointing your problem. did you notice any abnormal wear patterns on the belt sides such as a burn spot or maybe traces of oil or any contaminates on the belt? a small drop of oil can cause you big problems. it is always a good idea to wash your belt with dishwashing detergent and the sheeves with a solvent like acetone, mek, xylene or etc... can you pin the throttle at 30 and cause the bike's rpm's to skyrocket like crazy? give us more info so we can help you.

the rpms will increase and the engine feels and sounds like it will pull like crazy, but it feels like the rear tires are spinning, but even after a long ways, they still feel like it, even when in awd. At 30 mph if I pin it, it will increase rpms, but the machine really won't accelerate. The belt doesn't seem to be wearing funny, but there is a slight ridge on the edge of the belt that looks like normal wear. There is no sign of oil and the belt doesn't look glazed. I'll try and replace it and see how it goes.

ya that sounds bad, id deffinatle say belt, it is to new for the clutch to go like that, and if you are pulling logs in high, not a good idea, then i am suppried that it hasn't gone already, have you noticed it stadely geting slower and slower, or did this just suddenly happen.

if the belt is slipping the clutch cover might get hot and you might be able to smell rubber burning after your ride it for a while

ok, I changed the belt today. The old one was worn a bit. I scotch brighted the clutches and wiped them clean with acetone and put it back together. It drove better, but still lacking some speed. It feels like the secondary isn't opening fast enough. I held it wide open and eventually it picked up some speed, but only about 50 or so. Should I tear the secondary apart? Could it be sticking a little? I'm planning on a heelclicker clutch next week, so I will probably wait until then. BTW, I only pull in low. Thanks

Maybe your clutch alignment is not right. Something is definitely not right. Wrong spring in secondary? Wrong helix? I don't know... but something is not right.

This sounds stupid but have you looked at the air box. Is it blocked?
