How did it all start? Did you post as someone else yesterday? What kind of compression do you have? Check for leaks in the carb boot with brake cleaner or carb cleaner. Spray it on the boot when you get it running. If there is a leak it will rev up. How are the crank seals? IS the cyclinder leaking around the base or at the head? Answer some of those questions and we'll go from there

I don't think if it had a broken reed it would mess up at idle too much, but I'm not sure.

compression feals good very good actualy , i dont have a gage but it feals nice so i dont think its that , the boot looks good and ive tryed with wd 40 ,,,it just got al messy and didnt change a thing , i looked al around the head and base gaskets ,,,they are nice and clean . you asked about the crank seals, i dont know , when you crank the starter it pulls hard for air at the carb

it all started one day i was screwing around my yard and it ran great i left it for about 30 min and when i came back i fired it up and it started to miss, thinking it was just frozen up i pulled it to my shop with my sled to un thaw it . frome that point on it has always ben a 50 50 bet some times it will run good some times bad, i then thought it was a dirty carb , poped it out and tore it down she was clean as clean gets . i re assembled it and threw it in set it up fired it up and it ran good, i thought i had it . next day i went to ride fired it up and it starts missing again **** ME OFFFFFFFF!!!!!thought i had the float wrong i bent it to shut the needle early (i figer wen it misses it must be rich) fired it up and she reved so high my dog knocked him self out on the dog door (that was funny ) ,,,,, now it must be lean sheeeeeaaaatttt
so now i set the float by the book and hear i am . damn quad wont run,,, dog hates me ,,,snows melting so i cant use my sled ,,,woh is me.

I'm not real up on the 400's but could it be that somthing in the flywheel area has come loose? that could be altering your ingnition timing and sometimes it stops in the right place and stays for awhile then moves to where it misses again. Like mabey the breaker plate comeing loose I guess it's not called the breaker plate with cdi ign. but it's the plate you would move to set timing.
Hope you find the prob.

Jeff

I agree, check your flywheel, you may have sheared the keyway on the flywheel.I have seen this happen before.

I know this might sound stupid here, but have you tried or check your electronic throttle position? It is something you can check really easy and rule it out. One of my 400's acted the same way as yours and that is the problem I had. If you have done all the above w/out success, try it, just something else to rule out.

the throtal control was by passed by a diffrent owner , id like to find th wires for it , ware do they start at , ware do they go to , what coller are they, ?

i realy think that something is going on with the timming , i have the book but id like to hear from someone i trust that has done this before how hard is it to get to the fly wheel ??

i just realized ,,,when all this started my rope for my recoil stoped going in all the way!!!!@! i wonder if some shavings got in there , isnt the fly wheel behind the recoil ???##^%#^%#*
