Default 400 Scrambler

I'm going to look at one tomorrow. The build date was 10/1998 I think so I believe its a 99 model. I am wondering what to expect for a price. It doesn't have the original plastic, theres surface rust all over from being up north, it appears to be completely stock. Its a 4X4 model...thats all i can think of for now. Are there any problems I should look for?

Thanks

Wolverine, I would not pay any more that 2000-2500 if it is rusty. I'm not sure about New Mexico, but people put scrammy's in the paper all the time near where I live. I see them for 1800-2500 and in fairly decent shape all the time. Personally, I would make sure the 4wd works well, and that it shifts cleanly between F-N-R (i.e., no or at least only minimal grinding when transmission gear engages).

Just as an FYI, the first thing you should do is call RCR and get a Stage 1 kit for that thing. For $325 you can not go wrong. It will really wake the quad up. It will be night and day.

Good luck!!

Actually, I'm not in New Mexico right now...I'm in Minnesota, hence the rust. I got the price today, they want $1995. I didn't get to ride the thing though(20 degrees+20 mph winds+snow=no test ride for me). When its parked with the engine off the shifter moves through the gear pattern really easily, almost to the point I would be afraid it might not stay engaged while riding. I was planning on checking the 4x4 when I get to ride it. Also how much smoke should I expect from the exhaust (one of my friends had a 2-stroke 300 that made smoke real thick smoke from the day it was new).

Hey 4wheels do you know what your top speed is? I'll look into that stage 1, may see what I can get from the guys at work first though.

When I got mine used it smoked a lot. My dealer said its normal for sport 400. After a few long rides I noticed I was going through almost as much oil as I did gas. I checked the oil injector and the second cable was rusted and broken off. So the engine was injecting oil but too much. I replaced it with the oil block off kit and it still smokes like a 2 stroke when cold but nothing compared to before.

Check the oil in the counter balance too like someone else mentioned. Other than that I love mine.

Well I got to ride it today here was what I noticed:
Good:
Started very easily (it was about 30 degrees outside)
4x4 works fine
Underside is dent free, just the paint is rubbed off
no excessive smoke from exhaust
new near perfect black plastic

Bad:
light grinding when going into gear
died when I put into reverse once (worked fine another time)
Tranny is loud when the engine is reved in neutral (this kinda worries me)
Brakes weren't to good (I think this must be a cold day+ Polaris thing cause I rode a 04.5 500 HO that was the same way last weekend. I would put a separate brake system on it anyway)

Please tell me what you think, esp about the reverse thing and the loud tranny.

the light grinding is probably just your idle being to high,so it grinds when you put it in gear..push in the little yellow button the the left side ,thats your reverse override hold it in as you go in reverse..you might need to bleed your brakes or replace the pads..
