drag ONLY 400l
#1
i'm thinking pretty seriously about building my sport to be drag only. does anyone know if HPD does stroker motors if you even can stroke a 400l? it's going to be a full hpd race motor with an ftz alcohol carb. also i'm thinking about getting ftz to make a drag pipe for it, does anyone else make a drag pipe for a sport or is it a custom only? it would be appreciated if some of you polaris gurus gave me some info/feedback. thanks in advance for the replies!!!

Random, get with me and I'll show you what you need! I'm hoping to ride at St. Joe on Sunday, you have any plans?
What year 400L are you wanting to build up? FTZ and HPD both have excellent pipes for drag, but only for '98 an older models.
I hope you've got a deep pocket book, because it's not cheap.

A400l, sorry i already have plans.i have to go up to Montgomery city to do hay. how much $$$$ is it, i figured about 2500 for a complete race stroker motor from HPD. or is it more? i decided to build up the sport instead of the banshee cause i thought it would be cheaper, am i wrong? for the banshee i wound up with about 3540 without carbs, pistons, and pipes! oh yeah the sport is a '99(why do i always gotta buy new stuff) why only for '98 and older?
Are you going to come down to Bonne Terre? normally i'm there just about every saturday night. not going tonight though, our 4x4 car motor is not together yet. thanks

Why Buy a new motor?
Have your's ported ($250), forged Wiseco ($100), HPD billet head w/ girdle kit ($280), HPD drag clutch kit ($140), FTZ alky carb w/ K&N ($350), V-force/Boyesen rad valve ($150), Hot Seat +3" swingarm ($340), new chain, sprockets ($150), remove oil injector, new throttle cable ($40), shave fly wheel ($100), new pipe around ($300), and a set of paddles if you're planning to run at Bonne Terre ($175, or $300 w/ new wheels).
Thats just the basics for around $1600, providing you can tear down your own motor and rebuild it.

A400l, that's not a new motor that's my motor. really i'm still getting info i don't know for sure which bike i'm gonna do.
here's my dilemma i know the sport will be a little cheaper but i don't know if it will run the time i want. the banshee will be a little more $$$$ and i know it will run the time. with the mods you listed what do you think that'll run at Bonne terre? i'm shooting for at least a 4.8. later

Jason of Midwest Sports Center (Farmington, MO) runs around 4.25's with his '98 using an HPD set up and an FTZ carb.
Consistency is the name of the game at Bonne Terre. Having an auto makes it a bit easier to hit your mark.
You'd need a methanol buring stroked 420 kit Banshee to come close to hitting 4.8's. How much more are you willing to spend to shave .17 seconds?

A400l, i know who Jason is but i didn't think his bike was nearly that fast. just to make sure, is it 4.25's or 5.25's. I think it's 5.25's because back when they had that whole rule about you hade to wear leathers if you ran a 5.3 or faster, and he didn't wear them. Personally i think it would be pretty hard to propel a polaris into the 4's. have you seen Jason's paddles, he's running 10 Taller Haulers! from our expierence with tires i think if he went with 10 haulers it would hook up and not slow him down on the top end so much. Then here's my question IF i go with the polaris (cause i still don't really know!! ahhhhh!!!) can HPD stroke it? because (give me your opinion on the setup) if they can it'll be bored to a 440 then stroked to a 490 or 500. seeya

Now that you mention it you are right about the times. I dunno what the hell I was thinking of!!
The question has been raised before on stroking a 400L motor, but I've never heard of anybody going through with it.
And, although HPD and AAEN market their big bore kits as 440 it is actually 416cc. Because the 400 is actually 378cc, they're adding 40cc to that and come out around 416cc or so.
Have you talked with Rick Ritter about this? He usually does'nt go that radical with his motors, but might if you ask him. He did for me. It could save you some time in shipping fees/turn around and all that. He is aslo a HPD dealer so you can get everything you need from him.
You will probably never get a polaris go be as fast as a well built 420 or 470 'Shee, but look on their faces when you're only 2-3 lengths behind them on a Polaris makes up for it. They kinda have that deer in the headlight look.
