Ok, I need your help... I have a 99 Sport 400. I love it! But, I have found a few times that I realy could have used 4x4. So I'm going to trade it for a 2000 Scrambler. Now, which one? I like the 2 stroke (first 2 stroke i've ever owned). What would be the advantages of the 500? I'm even concidering the Explorer. I would like to have the low gear. I would realy like the Scrambler 400 with the Explorer's transmision. Anyway, I can't make up my mind. What do you'all think about the pros and cons? Thanks

I've been holding off on getting a pipe kit because I can't make up my mind on keeping it. I've read all the posts on RCR and HPD, but is the perfomance realy that noticeable? Everyone says night and day. As soon as I make up my mind, I'll be getting one or the other.

Same dilema...different person. I too had the same questions about 3 months ago. I already had the Xplorer400 and was undecided as to which Scrambler...400 or 500? The 4x4 option is a must for me. I spend most of the time now in 2x4 but when that deep mudhole pops up...

By the way if you really love the speed and performance of your sport I would not recommend
the Xplorer unless you are ready to lose performance and agility on the trails. (but gain it in the mud and rocks!) It's midway between a Scrambler and a 4-stroke Utility...

The 2-stroke is "peppier". Has a "speedier" feel to it. You know...you have a 400l. The 500 has more torque but less mods to be added. I was coming off a 2-stroke so decided on another.

I used my Xplorer and my father-in-laws Sportsman as a preliminary comparison. I hate getting off my 400 and going onto a 500...except for the IRS. "Feels" slower. So with all that in mind I went for a 400 which by winter could be up to 55hp+... It really is addictive. I am getting the HPD pipe installed for monday...I will post the "seat of my pants" impression!

Personal choice I guess. Try both at the dealer.

If it's a fast play quad you want, get the 400. If your going to work it or use it for hunting, or slower type riding get the 500. Also, the two stroke smell may tend to stick to you, if you're worried about scent ( for hunting ).
As for the pipe, modding a 400 is a VERY REWARDING endevor. It's not just a life style, it's an addiction...

Not much experience with the 400, other than a buddy has one in 2WD. But I love my 500 4x4. It is everything I want in an ATV. If I could just keep the mud under the fenders.

BLH,

I think the best upgrade from a Sport would be the 400 Scrambler. The 4x4 it's a real advantage. The 500 is awesome too but, it is more expensive to get and modify. Stock, the 500 is a little faster but, if you put the money that you saved buying the 400 into it. It will go a lot faster.

If you want 4x4 to do anything else than playing, the Explorer would be a better quad.
