broken steering stem - is this common?
today i was out riding and noticed some extra play in my handle bars. looked underneath, and the handle bar mounting plate that is welded on the top of the steering stem was cracked and broken down the right side of the plate.
a few months ago the same thing happened to my buddies 400 trail blazer. we fixed it by making a new 1/4 inch thick plate and welding to the top of the stem, no big deal.
but im just wondering if any one else has had this happen to them. just a design flaw? any ideas or improvements?

it seems to be pretty common, mine has bent a few times and cracked once,my buddies cracked pretty bad also..he took his to work with him and had the weld turned on a lath then welded a thicker piece of steel in its place.im working on getting the post from hotseat performance..
