I bought a 1995 400 Explorer new and drove it until March when I bought a new Sp 500, the main reason I traded was that I ride in the mountians twice a year and the Explorer didn't have EBS. I had several years of trouble free riding, replaced the sending unit for the fan, two belts, and the brakes once. Basically all I did was clean and oil the chains twice a year, grease all fittings twice a year, keep the tires inflated, and ride. I did change the transmission fluid once.

The Explorer is awesome. I've had zero problems with mine.
But i can't comment on the 95.

Had a 96 Explorer and a 96 Sportsman 400 which are pretty much the same machine and loved them both. I never had a problem with either of them. The main issue is maintenance. As long as you keep everything greased and keep an eye on your counterbalance oil they should be great machines...

I had a 99' xplorer 400, awsome machine, it still hasn't gone back to the dealer since I picked it up.

My dads go one and it spanks any 4*4 off the line today. In the mud or in a drag race, griz, kawi, 700, 660= Not even close. And he has less money in it than any new quad you can buy, even with all the mods.
