New 600, is this noise normal?
#1
First time ATV owner, thanks to everyone here for helping make up my mind which one to get. I chose a Sportsman 600 twin. I'm getting used to it but it does make a chattering sound as driveline engages if I try to start out slowly. I read that this model has a noisey AWD system, but is this normal? Also it seems like I have to rev it quite a bit to get it moving. I would like it to start moving at a lower RPM. I am definitely not unhappy with it, its a nice machine. I just wondered if mine is normal. Thanks again.

First off welcome to the forum Tim. The twins all seam to have the drive line noise you are talking about. When you are talking about high rpm engagement what is it?

hey tim
the chatter that u are getiing from the driveline may be a damaged belt from a braked take off or stuck tire burn on the belt. this may also be causeing ur high rpm take off. should be moving in high range at no more than 1500 rpm.
did u buy it new

Mine is quiet and smooth from takeoff on my 700 EFI. I only get a little bit of the chatter with light throttle or letting off throttle and going into a coast. It was an issue for me at first... I don't even think about it now.

yes the driveline noise is normal for all polaris twins but we all know polaris needs to do something about it. they sound like gears are clattering and are going to come ripping out of the side cover. my 700 makes alot of noise and it bugs the hell out of me but I guess if theres no fix for it why bitch if it does no good. mine also seems to engage at a higher rpm than I would like to have it engage.

Follow-up after a little more time with it: The noise seems to have been from trying to start to slow. After riding it more, I don't hear it. The RPMs are around 1500 when it starts moving.
My brother brought his Yamaha 350 2WD over today and we put a few miles on both. He rode mine and was impressed.
I took it back out after some heavy rain tonight and found some muddy hills and a rutted field with standing water up to 12" deep. It was hard to believe how easily and smoothly it rode through it all. I LIKE IT!
