Chet
Sorry to hear about the problem youre having. I really think Polaris should cover the part missing. I recently went to my dealer to order the reverse actuator, the little black box on the right side of the motor that allows you to shift into reverse. I ordered it and paid for it, when I went to pick it up he gave me my money back, said it was a part that had been recalled. In that instance, only the cost of the part was covered since it is long out of warranty, but no big deal since I replaced it myself. All I had to do was give them the old part back, even though I had already pried it apart to see what was inside. They didnt care about the mud tires or the fact that the black box is underwater half the time..lol!

Hope you get this resolved

Rangerchet,

Do not let the dealer tell you that the tires are the problem. Polaris offers a 26" tire for the bikes and the dealers down here will warranty the bike with any 26" tire. The extended warranty will even cover parts with a 26" tire. I have seen Polaris warranty parts on bikes that have been out of warranty for over 4 months, so I would be on that dealers butt to get the matter resovled.

Now you've got my curiosity going; is the reverse box recall because of safety or design problem? Should I see my local dealer about it? I haven't ridden for awhile except around the neighborhood, so I haven't had any problems but I sure don't want a problem out in the boonies. How did your reverse box fail?? TIA

I will let you guys know how it turns out.
I have a note to go with ronnie's info. about our black box.
Yes, I know the black box your talking about. Do you guys remember that about 3 weeks ago, I e-mailed polaris and asked them what parts might be bad on my xpedition 425 or what parts might break down and I should buy and replace them. They
emailed me back and said there was only 1 re-call on our xpeditions and that was to recall our machines to see if we were missing 1 tiny part in the oil pump. They said my machine should not break down. Now Ronnie tells us that there is a recall on our reverse box. I think I will now, go to my local dealer where I bought my atv and order the new one and find out if I can get the same deal as ronnie. Polaris is keeping this one quiet.
I know in the past, our friend wolfman from canada
had an xped. and he told us about this last year. I did not give it a second thought. He has a bomb.
ds650 now. He sold his xped. I dont know what the big deal is. They say there is not that many xpeditions out there. I do know that once in a while I have a hard time getting into reverse. Well, polaris lied to me about my last e-mail to them.... Isn't that nice. rangerchet

Update, I am at work but I used my cell phone to call long distance and talked to the service manager. They took my serial no. and are going to call polaris. They did not argue with me at all. Its obviously a slip up on there part. rangerchet

Sorry to hear about the problems with your Xpedition. I've got about 390 miles on mine and have not had any problems as of yet. We just came back from Colorado and put on about 260 miles while we were there. We got to the top of Mt. Antero OK , but it was running a bit rich at that altitude as we did not rejet the carb before we left Iowa. Good luck dealing with Polaris.

i just got my xped 425..from what the dealer told me about the black box is that the first 6 mos or so of manufacturing they had some black boxes that were n/g..they didnt hold up..i guess it depends if you bought a machine that was made the first 6 mos or so..mine is date stamped 8-99 and it has the updated black box..the dealer told me any expeds with the first version would be changed at no cost as it was a defective part..hope this might help out about the infamous black box..i was wondering if there was anyway to find out just how many exp.425`s have been sold or any other type of machine? is that something polaris will tell you or can you find out somewhere else? does anyone know if it will be produced for the 2001 line up im very happy with my exp 425 but it is only 2 weeks ive had it and about 30 miles on it so

Thanks Bowtiepu, well that includes me about the black box. Mine is the first series made. I am amazed then that my xped. has been shifting for 15 months and 1000 miles. I have been stuck in reverse in the past. the problem kind of went away. I still do have some trouble putting it in reverse once in a while. I had it looked at, at 2 different polaris dealers in the past and they just said, I can't find anything wrong. Either I have had bad luck with polaris dealers in the last
15 months or they are not doing there job correctly? Not sure which. It seems that the only way, I can get them to do whats right is to stay on top of them. It should not be that way. If I had not read that one line of my receipt carefully
and understood what it meant. then polaris would never have been called about the missing spacer.
I think that for me, it is safe to say, that its not my machine that has been the issue. It seems to always be a problem with one polaris shop or other. You guys in texas, sound like you have better dealerships. There is one more, I know of up north that I could try, thats only about 30 miles away. I may try them next. I dont expect to hear back about my polaris bearing problem today. I do think that I can get on the phone though and call and order that black box. rangerchet

rangerchet, before you order it see if its something that can be covered under warranty..polaris definitley fessed up that there was a problem with them so even if your out of your 6 mos warranty they should at least replace the part like they did for the other person that posted here about the box

As you guys can tell, I am dealing with 2 different polaris shops right now. The one way up in northern minnesota is the place that fixed my rear axle bearings and found the missing spacer. They said they are calling polaris and will get back to me by phone.

I have called my local dealer, the place where I purchased my atv and told them What I know now about the black box, or acuator. I talked to the cheif in the service dept. He knows what part I am talking about but he is not aware of the parts status. He is going to also contact polaris and find out 1. if they will send and pay for the part. 2. if they will cover having a polaris dealer install it. I am suposed to call him back on thursday.

I am afraid that polaris is going to have to show me what they stand for now.

And remember, that I e-mailed polaris my self a while back. Guess what. I asked about that part. I also asked if Any parts on my xped. might be in question and I should buy new ones and replace. There answer to me was not entirely accurate.
***** here is there reply *****
Thank you for your recent e-mail to Polaris Industries Inc.

Polaris has only had one Service Bulletin for your ATV, which was concerning
the oil pump. We do not believe you should have to replace any other parts
on your ATV, we would recommend that you have your dealer inspect the ATV to
make sure it is operating correctly. If your dealer finds anything wrong
with your ATV, please have them contact our Technical Service department to
see if Polaris can assist in repairing the ATV.

Thank you
******** end quote **** Polaris up above did not offer that I get a new black box. Yes I told them the serial no., p. o. no. and date purchased.
They did not mention that I might want to buy tie-rod ends. Etc. etc. However, my dealers have not been calling polaris either which is what polaris is saying that the dealers should be doing... but were not doing... I dont think polairs's letter is wrong or bad or anything. Just
not as up front with me as I was requesting. rangerchet.....
