I have just recently bought and installed a chain tensioner on my '01 500 4x4. It was pretty easy to install. I think mine was the HPD unit. It has a grease fitting as the HSP does not. HPD's comes with a drill, tap, and bolts to mount it. You will have to cut off the chain slide mount on the bottom of the swing arm. I can't run my swing arm guard now untill I modify it to fit around the tensioner. It is worth it though. I had to adjust my chain after every other ride before. I haven't had to do it once. I have been riding about 6 times since I put it on. If you get the greasable one, make sure the zerk fitting doesnt rub the chain .
