I own a 2004.5 Sportsman 600 twin 4x4 in yellow. Here are some ideas that I did on mine that may help you make your sportsman stand out from the pack.
First thing that I did is break it in (well everyone shold do that!). When it came time to change the oil on it I didn't feel like spending an arm and a leg on an oil filter. I work at an auto parts store, and checked out the oil filter book for a cross over to the polaris filter. Wix fitler (made by Dana, and the #1 filter in NASCAR) makes a filter for the Sportsman 600/700 twins. The part # is 51357. Filter quality is up there with the polaris one, and you save around $5.00 over the cost of the polaris oil filter.
Next thing that I added to my sportsman were the front, and rear rack extenders from polaris. I don't know why they didn't just install these things from the factory (the 700 comes with them as standard equipment). Cost $69.95 each.
My sportsman stock tire from the factory were the Carlise Badland XTR. Now I wasn't too impress with this tires performance, and I do a lot of riding in some pretty hard terrain. So I added a set of Carlise swamp pro tires. These tires look similer to the Super Swamper Vampire tire tread, and go though just about anything. I also went with a bigger size tire to increase gound clearence, and flotation. I also added a set of ITP type C rims (Cost $79.99 each) to make sure the bigger tires would fit properly on my quad. 27x10x12 front (Cost $74.95 each), and 27x12x12 rear (Cost $85.99 each) make my sportsman look pretty mean. Standing still or throwing mud!
To help the 600 twin turn those oversized tires I did some modifcations to the motor and driveline as well. The 600 twin (which pumps out about 40HP from the factory, and nick named "the torque monster") is a killer motor. I added a K&N high performance air filter (Cost $39.99) to help on the intake side. I also installed a Pure Polaris high performance silencer made by White Bros Racing (Cost $215.99) to help on the exhaust side. I also installed a Hotseat Clutch kit (Cost $165.99) to help me with my launch, and keep my motor in the power band that turns those tires like no tomorrow. I can out accelerate my buddies 500 Scrambler in the first 500 feet!!!
I also added some accessories to make my Sportsman work hard for me. I installed a gun rack, ATV logic handle bar bag, and Moose three way hitch. I also plan to install a warn 3000lb winch soon (I have gotten my sportsman stuck, and at just shy of 850lb it takes another big ATV to pull you out or your a sitting duck!).
I hope this helps you in making your Sportsman your way out!
