Trailblazer 250. Where's the powerband?

I remeber riding a Polaris back in the late 80's. I think it might have even been a trailblazer. It was a stock 250 unit that my brother-in-law owned. That 250 had a really sharp power band just like my Honda CR250. I have just purchased a 98 Trailblazer thinking that this 250 would have the same kind of sharp powerband of the older Polaris 250 that my brother-in-law owned. Is there any modfications out there that I can add to get a sharp powerband out of this 250. Just seems to me that Polaris has really detuned the 250's compared to what they used to be.

The older 250's were seriuosley detuned because of the 400 that came out. They had better porting, bigger carb and different pipe. You can still get the newer 250 to run with the 400's. You can get all kinds of mods for them . Anything from a pipe, clutch kit to a full race mod. I have a highly moded 250 that beats stock 400's. I would only recomend 2 companies for mods. HPD and AAEN. These 2 companies specialize in Polaris performance. If you have any other questions then just ask. There are plenty of people on here that have tons of info on the 250's. Me being one of them. Here are the sites.

Trailblazer 250. Where's the powerband?

Thanks for the info. I have checked out the web sites you listed .They both talk about a smooth Powerband. I would like to know if anyone has been able to tune the 250 to get a really peaky powerband. I am looking to get it to were the 250's Powerband is instantanious at 3000 to 5000 rpm. Or should I look at refitting it with a 300cc Jug and go from there. Would also a Reed Conversion kit give it that peak I'm looking for. In looking at the pipes the AAEN HDP and Rick have to offer. They don't seem to offer a pipe with a very large expansion chamber. Does anyone make a pipe with a large tunable expansion chamber?

The trailblazer does have a full HPD clutch kit in it. The past owner has put about 15 hours on it since the kit was put on. He said he had a DG pipe on it but it was to loud. He sold it and put the stock one back on.

Thanks - Dave

The reed conversion will give it a snappy powerband and with lightening the flywheel it will be almost instant response. It will never be like a Banshee but I have seen some pretty wicked 250's. Whatever yuo do STAY AWAY FROM DG. Although DG is a good company for some but it will kill the power on a Polaris. The HPD race pipe has a big expansion chamber. If you want it to be fast and responsive then plan on spending at least 1500 bucks on the low end if it is done right. AZBadboyz puts some wicked 250 together. They like to use a reed cage from a banshee. It is alot cheaper then HPD's reed cage conversion. The last time I read you can get mid 40-50 hp out of the 250. That is alot more than when I started building mine. They are becoming popular to build up but expensive.

2Manytoys - Thanks for the info again. I was just checking out BadBoys site. Looks like I will start warming up the Lathe and Mill for a winter project. With your 42hp setup what kind of fuel do you have to run.

Most likely you were riding a Cyclone 250 back in the 80s. Mine had a powerband like a switch. The auto tranny made it real easy to keep it there. It came from Polaris ported, with a larger carb, performance pipe, high engagement clutch, and milled head.

u cant run the 300 jug on it without some major porting. it will just be way off. porting or reed mods will give u power from about 3000-7000. mine makes best power from 4000 to 6700(peak RPM) mines not real peacky but it has lots of torque and its a good hill climber.

If you really want to get some great performance out of your 250 then you need to go to the one stop shop. From what it sounds like you will never be satisfied with the tipical modifications that you get from these other places....Don't get me wrong..they are all great companys but no one can get them to run like Dennis Shotwell....Stroke it.

Does AZBABOY'S 300 Stroker Kit increase the stroke length as well as the bore? Would I not be able to do the same by getting a 300cc jug and a 300cc rod and piston, or does it get a little more involved like a crank shaft swap as well.

Do you think the 300 stroker kit wil give me that instantanious poweband I am looking for. You know the powerband that comes out of nowhere and gives you that increadable adrenaline rush. I know the 250 will never have a powerband like a Banshee, but even half of that would be great.
