Aaen Roller clutch questions
#1
I've just bought a 2001 Xplorer 400, and am interested in the aaen roller clutch.
1) How much did you pay for yours?
2) How simple was the installation?
3) Are you impressed with its performance?
4) Would it be a good add-on with nothing else?
Thanks for your input.

I personally do not own one YET!
I think that clutch mods should be the last thing you do when modding a quad. ONce you have all mods you have planned for (as far as Power gain) then go for the clutch kit. The clutch kit is what gets the power to the ground.
You need specific spring setups for different quad setups. (different springs for different types of power) If you plan on doing nothing else to you quad as far as engine mods go, then go for the kit.
AS far as HPD goes, I feel they told you that just to sell their product. From what "I have read", the AAEN roller provides INSTANT backshifting. The AAEN roller has been said to be far superior to other clutch setups.
Ask Mike Chero how he felt after adding the roller to his Highly Modified 400L. From what I remember, the HPD clutch he had installed before hand didnt even compare to the AAEN???
Ill say it again, these are my opinions which I have gathered from my own personal studies and conversations/readings from other people.
I am sure someone w/ more experience w/ the setup will post.

Quadbuster, The ironic thing is that HPD sells a roller clutch kit and told me not to get it... I told Darrel over there that money was no object and that I wanted to spend at his company. Yet he did not push any products on me. Maybe Mike Chero could give us some first hand insight into this matter!

Price: Helix $90, Housing $150, Spring $20
Installation: You will need Snap-ring pliers and 2 people. If you're mechanically inclined I'd say its pretty easy. Only problem may be setting the tension correctly, but if you do it wrong, you'll know it.
Performance: Noticeable improvement in acceleration and downshifting while hillclimbing, but not a drastic improvement.
Good add-on: Yes, the first thing I would do to a Polaris is a roller clutch kit and new primary spring with weights.

Hey guys,
I paid $189 for mine and let me tell you it's the first mod I'd make if I had to do it again. The roller clutch makes the secondary clutch respond SO quick that you'd swear you were running a gearboxed machine. Throttle response is VERY quick. It is also a requirement any time you exceed 60 Hp at the crank. Those little plastic buttons just don't hold up with that much horsepower.
It also has the added benefit of acting as a type of EBS on down hills. It isn't much, but every little bit helps.

Mr. Chero
How exactly does this roller clutch work for/affect low end power? I was told that it is not recommended for slower rides and deep mud where a lot of low end torque is required.
Maybe Darrel at HPD misunderstood my questions when I spoke with him. He said that for sand duning it was great, but the quad had to be going at extreme RPM's. He told me that in mud or slowly going up hills it would be aweful?!?
If I was misinformed...would this work good with my setup?

Xplor,
For crying out loud, just call me Mike! I only get called Mr. Chero by the inmates at work.
I don't know where Darryl gets his info from, but my roller clutch works just fine in the slow going. I had a chance to prove it this last weekend on the Marienville bike trail. It worked great! Perhaps he was refering to just the springs that come with the complete kit. As I use his springs in Aaen's roller clutch, it seems to work for me.
