In reference to your price issue. 2001 Sptm 500 retails for $6,999. All 2000 models have been reduced to $6,649. Prep and freight is paid on each unit by the dealer. The dealer pays the freight to P.I and pays a man in his shop to uncrate the unit, set it up and prep it for delivery.
All dealers pay the same price for each unit, the dealer can sell it for any price, but just remember, You get what you pay for. You buy a machine at a low price, you probably won't get very good service. I would rather pay a few hundred bucks more and get 2-day turnaround, than buy cheap and have to wait two to three weeks.
At least you thinking and looking in the right direction, cause you know POLARIS IS THE ONLY WAY OUT!!!

There isn't a whole lot involved in prep. Basically, they take it out of the crate and maybe put the wheels and handlebars on it. Hell, I could do that. I've never had to take the AC back to the dealer once in 2 years for any mechanical problems of any kind. Polaris service in general sucks anyway. I'd rather have the low price, and I think the service depends on the dealer much more than just the price. Not every dealer charges freight and prep. Only those that try to skimp out every last dime out of somebody. I won't ever buy a quad from anyone who charges freight and prep. Ever. Thats a hose job.

Why would you have to wait two to three weeks just because you didn't pay a freight charge? Does the Brady Bill aply here or something?

I went to that jackass dealer again and sat there while the guy tried to tell me that every change in the 2001 model is not even noticeable. Steering, brakes, etc. Yeah right. This idiot doesn't even have any ordered yet. All he has to go on is a 325 magnum remington edition (never seen this before). It had the new brake cables on it though. His price will suck too when he gets it. A 200 mile drive to Missouri will cost me a tank of gas. I can handle that for a few hundred dollars difference. It will still be a month before I can seriously consider it though. I paid off the note on my AC today, and I still have to sell it.

Andy:
You're exactly right about the freight/prep stuff. I had the same problem in my area with both the Polaris and the Honda dealer. Polaris wanted to charge me a set-up fee and the Honda guys wanted both freight and set-up. Funny thing is, I know a guy who works at the Honda dealer, who told me that Honda themselves pay the dealership both freight and set-up, that the dealer then tacks this cost on to and in addition to the cost of the machine. They are then getting paid TWICE for freight and set-up! They said if the customer is REALLY pushy about it, and absolutely won't buy it, they would drop the price of one, but not both, just to make them think they are getting a good deal! I can't believe that kind of garbage. The Polaris guys here are almost as bad. The owner himself is a real jack_ss, though he does have one decent employee who told me that if I did want a machine, they would drop the set-up charges. I thought boy, how nice of you to not charge me additional for something you have already been paid for! Of course, the machines are way over priced out here anyway, which is another reason I ended up with the 'Cat.

As to your question earlier about is it really worth the $2k? Well, you'd have to realize yeah you are loosing the 'Cat, though for the additional $2k you'd spend, you would have a BRAND NEW machine. That means zero miles, warranty, new tires (even though you'd still have the 'Claws), satisfaction of having something "new". You wouldn't know how it performs, so every ride out would be a learning experience for a while. Not that riding the 'Cat isn't, though after riding it for a couple years now, you probably know its every move and can plan for it. With a new machine, this learning curve begins all over again, which then puts a new outlook on riding the same old trails. Who knows, maybe you could sell the tires and possibly get a little money back? Never know till you try.

Then again, maybe you should just win the lottery, sell the Honda and that way you could keep the 'Cat and buy the SP500 all at once! Best of both worlds!

Good luck

Mike

Cowboy, if I win the lottery, I'll buy you one too just for the hell of it. We don't have a lottery in Arkansas though. Too many bible thumpers (not a bad thing) to ever legalize any form of gambling here.

I see it as a new thing. Like thinking you need a new golf club(or clubs) every spring even though you still hit your old one fine. Just rebuilds interest in it. I would have a new machine as opposed to one with 1400 miles on it like you said. If I sell my AC to my sister's boyfriend, then it will still be around. They will probably be married in the next year and a half. I'd like to see him buy it too. He takes good care of stuff.

It will be cool to be able to do donuts again. Powerslide in 2wd and all that. Those knucklehead dealers with their freight charges will never sell me anything. I work at a trucking company, and just left another one last month. I know the guy that delivers to that one dealer and signs their bill of lading on the shipments too. They don't pay for freight. They damn sure want to charge you for it. Crooked bast@rds! I'll probably buy mine at the tractor place in Fayetteville or in Poteau, OK. Both have decent prices and don't fool around with freight charges. The tractor place has good people there too. I used to ride their stuff once a week when I was in college up there. You would walk in and they would say "If you want to drive anything, the keys are in them, take off!" This next time, I may be riding it up some loading ramps though.

I will say this, I'm not nor ever will be brand loyal no matter what I have. (except for chevrolet) I'll still tell you everything I like or hate about my quad. If I get a sp500 and find something that I don't like about it, anybody that asks will hear that. Not sugar coated.
