Default 400 trail mod- grenade?

my cousin (badazz 400) on here, has a 97 400 sport wich is running hpd's full trail mod. I bet it hardly has 40 hrs on it. The other nite he went riding, and it quit. First we checked for fire and narrowed it down to a bad coil.
The whole time I was pulling the engine over, I could hear a strange tap from the jug. Well when we looked closer we found that the front 2 studs that hold the base had snapped. Has anyone had this happen? Do you really need a girdle kit on the trail mod also?
I wasnt there when it happened, so I duno if he was riding or sitting still. All I no is that it didnt "diesel"

Gonna go eat turkey now. Ill check in later.
Thanks!

I have had a hpd trail mod for a couple years. I put the girdle kit on after the first year when I went to the cool head. I have heard of a few that broke, But not many as the trail mod compression is not very much. It is cheap insurance to have it though.

Yea, you definatly need it on the race mod ... i dont get how that could happen on a 400 trail mod ... what dome is he runnin in it do you know .... if he's runnin a 14:1 dome or 15:1, he's runnin high compresion i bet, and he'll need the girdle ...

My 4x4 is stock except for a wiesco piston and a trail pipe. This will be the fifth season on it since I rebuilt it. I took another stock head that I had, and milled it 20 thou. I was gonna put it on this weekend. But after seeing this im kinda hesitant.
Hey belt drive, what kind of girdle do you have? Did you drill your fins or just cut them out?

My cousin has the stock head milled by hpd. What will 20-25 do to your comp ratio?

Broke two of them. When you get enough mods through alcohol you will also have to have a plate welded on the cases or you will pull the cylinder right out of the case check out my pics to see what a nuked one looks like.

I've been running the trail pipe, porting, and a cool head on the wife's scrammy since it went out of the 6 months warranty. It's a 2001 model. The biggest thing is that most people dont recheck the base bolts and they loosen just a touch. Then snap goes the 2 front ears. Rick can fix the jug for him.

Well, the jug dosent seem to be hurt. But we havent taken it apart yet.
It snapped the studs almost flush with the ears
