I have a 97 400 Scrambler and love it. There is a '00 500/HO Scrambler in our riding group. I raced it once, both bone stock. The 500 got the jump on me and was about 2-3 lengths ahead of me. Then the 500 topped out and I began catching up. I weigh about 210 and the other rider is about 140. I have ridden that 500 and it is fun. The HO performs well, but since you ride a modified 400 you may be disappointed. And I'm sure you know it's not as easy to mod a 4 stroke.

I read that it was because of low demand on the 4x4. They are still selling the 400 2x4. I also heard they may bring it back due to a lot of orders for them. Sounds kind of conflicting. But that's what I read.

My dealer told me he sells allot more 500 Scramblers, even though it is unwarranted when it come to the 400 2 stroke motor, some people have a hard time believing they last as well as they do.

Stay with the 400. I had a 99 Scrambler 400, just sold it and got a 2000 Xplorer 400. The 400 two stroke is a great motor and it is fast. Its cheap, no oil changes, and there are tons of mods available for it. Unfortunately it sounds like the 400 two stroke motor will only be around for one more year.

Unfortunately if you want low-end on your 400 you would probably be best off getting rid of the pipe and changing your clutch setup around depending on how it's setup. I wanted the same low-end and was completely un-happy with the Hot Seat pipe I bought. It was great for top-end but it took away all the low-end. I ended up getting rid of it and then getting the head milled and vforce reeds and reed spacer. This helped the low and mid-range. It pulls better down low and in the mid-range but top-end is still kind of the same. I guess it all depends on what you want to do with it.

Jay, I would say stick with the 400, unless you are ready to give up a bit of performance. I feel it is like comparing my Xplorer to my father-in-laws Sportsman. Both are fast but mine feels "snappier".

When I first purchased my Scram400 I almost cried the first day. I was really disapointed in it's "feeling". Absolutely no low end. I added a Uni-filter, V-Force II reed valves and an EPI clutch kit the next week. WOW! It now had almost as much low-end power as my Xplorer in high gear. Acceleration was amzing and top end was not affected.

Obviously I wanted more, so I took out the EPI kit and stuck a HPD trail pipe on and lost some low end...but getting used to it. It takes a different kind of aproach to obstacles now. (but it ripps!!) I am getting a roller clutch soon. Olav at Aaen tells me it will actually help low end because it will engage better...I hope so.

Good luck!

The 400 is an awsome motor, stick with what you got considering the mods and all. They are discontinuing the 400 because 2-strokes will eventually be outlawed or manufacturers will not be able to produce and more 2 strokes due to the "Pollution" they emit into the atmosphere. I think California is going to outlaw 2 strokes in 2002 or so, followed by a few other states.
