Scrambler 500 vs.z400
#1
I have been looking over this site for awhile now and have decided to join. I currently own an 04 z400. I am looking into getting a scrambler 500 4x4. It seems to be a good compromise for a sport quad vs. 4x4. I havent had a chance to ride a stock scrambler yet and have a few questions. I need to see if the scrambler has any real problems. I want to make sure it has plenty of low end power. I'm not really worried about top end, but when I throttle it I want it to go. I'm 6'2" and about 250lbs. I know its heavier than my z but I'm sure I can still move it around when I'm riding (kick it out around corners and such ) Will the front end lift easy? I'm going to be giving up a LOT of speed for some more grunt and need to be sure the grunt is there. I have changed my riding style now and going around the deep pits just isnt fun. I don't want to get stuck with a tank so most other 4x4's are out. I also worry the auto may be a problem, either in thick mud or steep hills. I've never owned an auto and Im unsure of the pros and cons. Any info would be great. Thanks Parker

I ride with a few guys on 400Zs and they dont out run me by much on the topend and dont catch me in a drag race until they hit 4th so you wont be giving up much speed. But a stock 500 scrambler needs a little clutch work but you can get by with just a white or green primary spring. After that the frontend will come up as easy as any sport quad.As for problems I havent had any other than replacing a chain after 3 yrs of use and abuse.A set of alluminum wheels helps on the weight issue. As for power I tip the scales at 230 and it will haul butt.Tops out around 65-68.It will mud with the best of them but not like a Sportsman with huge tires.Hills and an automatic are the way to go you are always in the RIGHT gear. You wont regret geting one at all.

I went from a mildly modded 400ex, to an '04 500 scram. ftwflh is right on about the clutching though. In stock form it seems to rev quite fast with alot of engine noise, but yet not really accelerating very quick. but with a clutch kit from any good manufacturer ( HSP,HPD,Erlandson, etc.) wheelies & a nice low-midrange hit are quite noticeable with no loss of top-end. I can honestly say that I have more fun on this quad than I ever had on the ex. You can hang with both crowds with no worries at all. And if I want a quick speed fix, I just grub out the Banshee once in awhile.

it sounds like the scrambler 500 4x4 is just what the doctor ordered for you PUSHNF8!!!
you want low end grunt? you got it.
dont want to worry about shifting thru a mud pit or steep hill? you got the gear no matter what.
kick the *** out in a tight corner and lift the front up pulling out of the corner? no problem.
get stuck in the mud? switch it into 4wd and drive out( its a beautiful thing)
it can jump, but not like your z400. but i dont think youll be giving up too much speed at all. the 500s haul *** and go anywhere!
what more could you want?
recommended mods: clutch kit, white bros silencer.
just my thoughts,

if you have a z400 now you will be disappointed...have an 03 scrami and my cousin has a dvx400 and i cant keep up with him for the life of me!!!! not alot of speed and they're really top heavy have rolled mine plenty of times!!!and the belts burn real easy, good to have 2 or 3 on hand!!!

the z might be a few mph faster on topend, lowend the scrammy has more grunt..if your a good rider then i wouldnt worry about rolling it when sliding around corners, doing donuts will make it roll pretty easy if your not paying attention though.i dont know what omaha did to his belts but im still on my first belt with over 2 years on it and thats riding pretty much as hard as the scrammy will handle.i say go for it and even after owning the z you wont be disapointed, the scrammy will go lots of places that you wouldnt even consider going on the z..

Im not real worried about the speed, doesnt matter which one is faster if theres 5 feet of mud, a few trees, and tons of stumps in the path.
the bottom line is Im sick of avoiding obstacles or finding another way around. I've already got a $400 fine for reckluse opperation of a recreational vechicle on a public road. Cop was just pissed I was faster. LOL Anyway, I intend to hammer the hell out of the scrambler but I can keep up with maintnace.
I only want to be able to get up and go. I ride mostly with honda 450 foremans, I just want to be at least as quick at acceleration. I will probally pipe, jet and do a clutch.
I've ridden alot of machines and Im ready for a good mix of power. grunt, and ability. I just dont want to be at the back of the pack!!!!!
