sp 800 loss of power
#1
Hi Guys, I got a brand new sp 800. Took it for a first ride before christmas everything was great.
After 20 miles the 800 started to lose power, I stoped and it went dead, restarted (it took some time) and it seemed to be running in 1 cylinder.no power at all, It stayed that way all the way back home. I took it to the dealer and we found out that both plugs we're black.
The dealer told me that these bikes (injection) dont like to run on idle too much, so he changed the plugs. I took it again today for another ride and it did exactly the same thind. I suspect an injector problem or computer bug. I ride in cold weather.
Any ideas? It is going back to the dealer tomorrow.
The bike run's on premiun gas and as 68 miles on it.
Thanks.

I don't think letting it idle too long is going to do it. I am riding mine in 40 degree weather and have had no such problems The injector at the engine is sealed with a sealant so nothing can get in there...........they need to check the EFI to see if you have an injector failure, which is probably what is..........they have a diagnostic hook up to check this out........keep us posted.......

Your dealer should of been on the ball. With that plug in on your pod they could of done a dianostic right then to see what the problem is. Most likely the EFI program. Just changing plugs on a EFI quad and say don't let it idle for long periods sounds like a tech that doesn't know what he is doing. If both plugs are black then to much fuel is being dumped , or not enough air to make the mixture.

The Dealer is full of it....I let my '05 700 EFI idle all the time, thats a must. There has to be something wrong with the computer or fuel injectors...no reason the plugs should be fouling out....something isn't right. Take it back to the dealer....maybe take it to a different one....

If you put your 800 in PARK and then turn the key off and on three times in less then five seconds, then leave on.Any blink code numbers stored in the EFI module will display, one at a time, in alphanumeric display. The number 61 and the word END will display after all codes have been transmitted. try that and see if you come up with a blink code.hope this can help in any way.

my 700 efi was running on 1 cylinder at one point, when i first started it up, i let it sit out under my one barn roof over night while having a party in the heated garage. and it was about 10 degrees outside....it had zero power and it just wouldnt run right, i turned it off and waited for the fuel pump....same thing...i cycled the pump 3 or 4 times and then it worked fine, and hasnt done it since.
the last 3 times i left it in the barn and its been 15 degrees out or below i cycle the fuel pump 3-5 times before turning her over and it hasnt done it since. I know there not technically supposed to do that, but it worked for me.

Update: My 800 spent a week a the dealer. He pluged the computer, no codes or any problems visible. He than unpluged end pluged back all the connections, the computer was working fine. He also checked the plugs, air filter, no problem visible. I took it back for a ride yesterday. The bike was running fine, we only did about 30 miles but everything was fine. Strange.

Patpath 800, I have had similar problems on two different EFI equiped machines. The first was on a Merc 2.0 liter Champ. out board, this is Mercury marines V-6 racing motor. there is no computor diagnostic plug in. I checked all sensors and eletronic componants, all checked out fine but the motor just wouldn't pull under load. No one could figgure it out everything was in spec. The other was on the Idel and low speed driveability of my wifes BMW 325 ES. Same thing check all componants and all were in spec. In both cases it was a conector the out board was fixed when i changed to my drag racing throttle body and found a bent pin in the conector, the car was a broken pin socket that allowed one pin to contact another found this one by having the motor running and slowly unplugging the conectors. There are a lot of pin plug in's on an EFI and it is possible that you have (had ) one that was not where it was supposed to be. This can be very hard to locate some times. I got lucky twice.

Same problem started back today. I took it for 2 great rides over the last week-end and it went great, no problem or symptom at all. Today after 2 miles it started back again. So I left it in the dealer yard and I will contact him tomorrow. It seems that the problem wasen't fixed by the dealer and that it is intermitent.
